In Search of Optimal Solutions: ADRO’s Migration to AWS

Using AWS native HPC solutions, Aerodynamic Development Race Optimization (ADRO), a company that designs vehicle body kits using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology, can now complete CFD simulations in three hours, a task that previously took three days or more in its previous environment.

Improved performance

Reducing the time for CFD simulations from three days to three hours

Cost efficiency

Achieving 80% savings with pay-as-you-go pricing

Ease of use

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) enabling ADRO to build the desired environment

Overview

ADRO, a startup specializing in high-quality body kits manufacturing, applies cutting-edge technology that integrates aerodynamics into car tuning to optimize driving performance. The optimization process involves simulating air flow and pressure distribution through the vehicle's body kit. However, their existing high-end PC lacked the capability to run Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations efficiently. Choosing AWS has allowed ADRO to run simulations faster and benefit from the scalability and flexibility of AWS infrastructure at an efficient cost. The adoption of AWS' native High-Performance Computing (HPC) solution not only improved simulation speed but also provided enhanced scalability and flexibility for their operations.

Opportunity | Accelerating Growth with HPC

Founded in 2020, ADRO is a startup specializing in the production of high-quality body kits with an aerodynamic design. The company possesses advanced technology that integrates aerodynamics into car tuning body kits, aiming to optimize driving performance. ADRO CEO Yoon Seunghyun highlights the positive reception in overseas markets, attributing it to the incorporation of technologies such as lightweight carbon fiber and drag reduction into car body kits, which traditionally focused solely on design. This success has propelled ADRO's expansion into global markets, including North America, Australia, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, resulting in a notable increase in sales.

To enhance the quality of its body kits, ADRO applies Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology. However, limitations with their high-end PC hindered efficient CFD simulations, with simple simulations taking days to complete. The existing infrastructure lacked the scalability and agility required. Furthermore, a partnership with the Kumho Tire Ecsta Racing Team resulted in a surge in analysis volume, necessitating a solution for faster simulations to analyze airflow during car driving. ADRO sought a scalable and flexible infrastructure solution that also offered cost efficiency.

After evaluating multiple cloud vendors, AWS stood out as the only platform that met our requirements for running CFD simulations. Additionally, the AWS Activate Startup Program not only provided us with essential credits but also offered valuable technical support. Solution | Running CFD Simulations with HPC on AWS

Simulations aimed at optimizing aerodynamic designs demand high-performance computing environment, a limitation faced by ADRO due to constraints with their existing a high-performance computing environment. Acquiring the necessary equipment was both costly and time-consuming, prompting the consideration of cloud solutions that allow the utilization of the highest-spec infrastructure when only required. “After evaluating multiple cloud vendors, AWS stood out as the only platform that met our requirements for running CFD simulations. Additionally, the AWS Activate Startup Program not only provided us with essential credits but also offered valuable technical support. Implementing CFD for body kit development would have been considerably challenging without the robust capabilities and support from AWS,” said ADRO CEO Yoon Seunghyun.

To cluster multiple instances for running CFD workloads, ADRO uses AWS ParallelCluster. For parallel processing, ADRO clusters multiple Amazon EC2 Hpc7g instances based on AWS Graviton processors and utilize OpenFOAM, an open-source CFD solution, within their AWS HPC cluster environment. Data storage is configured using Amazon FSx for Lustre, a fully managed service providing the parallel filesystem Lustre. “This strategic use of AWS's HPC solutions resulted in a remarkable reduction in analytical simulation time, from three days to three hours,” said the CEO.

Outcome | Racing Faster with ADRO’s Technology

Leveraging AWS' HPC solutions, ADRO has not only achieved substantial reductions in simulation times but has also realized significant cost savings with the elasticity of IaC enabled by AWS ParallelCluster. This flexibility allows them to choose the infrastructure tailored to their code base. Constructing equivalent computing resources on AWS in an on-premise environment would have incurred an initial deployment cost exceeding KRW 1 billion, additional maintenance staff, and a considerable deployment timeframe, hindering swift customer support. The code-based nature of AWS's HPC solution grants them the ability to build or rebuild infrastructure through code, providing flexibility and up to 80% cost savings with a pay-as-you-go approach.

The CEO acknowledges that credits received through the AWS Activate Startup Program were instrumental in finding the right service for the company after conducting extensive tests. Simulations on the conventional PC were not only time-consuming but also raised concerns about result accuracy, requiring significant effort to improve. However, with HPC on AWS, utilizing 1,200 cores per simulation allowed for accurate analysis and rapid results, instilling trust in the analytical outcomes. The CEO emphasizes that without AWS, adopting CFD for body kit development would have been deeply challenging, hindering the growth of their business. The CEO asserts that AWS is the most suitable and perfect cloud service for ADRO.
Additionally, ADRO's partnership with the Kumho Tire Ecsta Racing Team entailing technical support, resulted in the team's landslide victory in the 2023 Super Race Championship.
