Overview
Zilla Plus is an enterprise-ready, Kafka-native edge, and service proxy. It is a flexible, secure, and reliable way of creating stateless, multi-protocol API entry points into your Confluent Cloud cluster for both native and non-native Kafka clients.
Highlights
- Flexibility: Seamlessly connect both native and non-native Kafka clients to your public or private Confluent Cloud cluster. Declaratively defined Kafka, REST, SSE, gRPC, and MQTT APIs on top of your cluster.
- Security: Integrations with AWS Secrets Manager and AWS Certificate Manager. Support for Confluent Cloud API Keys used by Kafka clients outside AWS.
- Performance: Zilla proxies are stateless and scale out linearly. When multiple Zilla instances are deployed, only a single NLB is required, even if there are multiple brokers present.

Secure Public Access
The following CloudFormation template configures Zilla Plus as a Kafka proxy that enables secure, flexible public internet access to a privately-networked Confluent Cloud cluster. This allows Confluent and Kafka clients from outside the private network access to the full functionality of your Confluent Cloud cluster. For example, to manage topics (create/update/delete), to produce to/consume from topics, or to manage ksqlDB queries. It also supports connecting to a private cluster from a local machine as well as setting up access for third parties, such as partners.
Key features include:
- Support for custom DNS names via the public internet
- Support for Confluent Cloud API Keys used by Kafka clients outside AWS
- Integrations with AWS Certificate Manager and AWS Secrets Manager
Zilla does not require any changes to the underlying cluster, maintaining the privacy and security benefits of a private network.
When multiple Zilla instances are deployed, only a single NLB is required, even if there are multiple brokers present.
CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."
