AWS skills up new builders at HBCUs during Black History Month

To nurture future diverse leaders in technology during Black History Month, Amazon Web Services (AWS) worked across the United States to educate the next generation of students on cloud computing, cloud career opportunities, and how to excel in the technology industry.

AWS Educate and the Americas-based AWS solutions architecture team worked together at Bowie State University during a two-day, student-centered event near Amazon HQ2 in Arlington, Virginia. Almost 150 students from the Bowie State technology and security, computer science, and management of information systems departments came to learn about the AWS builder culture, AWS Educate resources, and early-career technical roles through Tech U.

Amazon’s Tech U Program is an accelerated career development program for new graduates who want to advance their skills and help customers design flexible and resilient cloud-based solutions. The residency program includes a six-month academic curriculum followed by three to six months of experiential learning in the field. Participants learn from top AWS subject matter experts and get paid while they train for a career working with AWS’s customers.

Participants had direct access to AWS leaders and asked questions about Amazon’s peculiar culture, interview tips, and paths for careers. On the second day, AWS conducted onsite interviews for solutions architect interns and full-time Tech U employees.

Additionally, the AWS team hosted a Customer Solutions Manager (CSM) candidate workshop for students to learn more about the CSM function. “It was great to learn about Amazon’s culture and the variety of tech careers offered at AWS,” said Ashley Azike, computer technology major, Bowie State University.

“This event did so much to boost our students’ interest in cloud computing. The students are still buzzing with excitement over AWS’s visit,” said Dr. Lethia Jackson, Chair, Department of Technology & Security at Bowie State University. Bowie State University faculty also participated in AWS Educate office hours to learn ways to use AWS Educate in their classrooms.
