Promising but buggy new interface
What do you like best about the product?
Tracks press coverage, can categorize coverage. Has reporting tools that look pretty cool, but I haven't had the time to investigate.
What do you dislike about the product?
Meltwater launched their new platform several months ago, but it's pretty buggy and has been since we started using the new system. It's hard to learn how the platform works since I'm never sure if a problem is user error or a bug.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Their new platform isn't working well for us - the functionalities look cool in demo, but aren't showing up for us. We're also encountering issues with the newsletter we're supposed to send from Meltwater every week.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure that you have a dedicated consultant who will walk everyone through their platform and is responsive to any issues. We also don't use it *that* often and so have a weird new interface has taken some time to get used to (especially considering bugs)
Good product for overall view of media landscape
What do you like best about the product?
It provides a very simple user interface to navigate through. Once you set up your Boolean query, it's very easy to create dashboards to get high level insights.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's hard to weed out the noise like press releases and wire pickup. The word cloud isn't really that useful as it provides such general terms it doesn't give any real insight.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're tracking the competitive media landscape, helping identify trends in the marketplace and monitoring our own brand perception in the media.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
They just switched to a new platform, which is much faster and easier to use than the old platform. Not all features have migrated over, but if they continue to add to the features, it will become a very capable media monitoring tool.
Meltwater has become a key tool at my PR firm in terms of media monitoring and list building.
What do you like best about the product?
I really like the amount of different features available in terms of searching content, creating media lists and setting up alerts.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike the way roles are listed on media contact listings. It makes it difficult to figure out a reporter's beat.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
My company has the benefit of forming media lists quickly and often and having access to both emails and phone numbers is very useful.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Meltwater is an excellent tool for PR firms who spend a majority of their time tracking news and pitching to different outlets. The service is very up to date which is extremely helpful when forming media lists.
Great service most of the time
What do you like best about the product?
Clips searches are fantastic and the monitoring service is nearly instantaneous in terms of reporting
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes when searching for contacts from smaller media outlets the results are inaccurate. Also, the article sentiment is often inaccurate just because in PR we have an embedded point of view, so a positive article for someone else may be negative for us, so this feature isn't really useful.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use this a ton for media lists and determining proper targets for media pitches. We also use it frequently for media monitoring and clips searches so we can provide coverage snapshots to clients.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's a fantastic service overall and makes my life as a consultant infinitely easier.
Meltwater is Great If You Know What You're Looking For
What do you like best about the product?
Meltwater does a great job of aggregating news from multiple sources and organizing them in an easy to read and sortable manner. Their media services are also great. I love the fact that I can look at recent articles from journalists to get a better idea of their writing style and topics.
What do you dislike about the product?
Often times there is too much information. Press release pickups and earnings articles can often muck up a report making it harder to produce accurate reports
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Media monitoring and tracking for reporting purposes.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Work directly with the support team to help define your searches and terms. They are very open to helping you improve your searches.
Features do not work as marketed, poor customer service
What do you like best about the product?
There is nothing about this product I would recommend to a colleague.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some features were appealing, but because the media lists and news monitoring features were incomplete and inaccurate, features such as reporting, analytics, and press release distribution became useless.
Incomplete and inaccurate media lists, which rendered the press release distribution function useless because we couldn't send a press release to the reporters or influencers we were trying to target.
News monitoring is not comprehensive and misses simple things Google can pick up (and there is not integration option with Google search)
Analytics function was rendered useless, since the media montioring did not pick up all media coverage of clients.
Product would go down and not function for hours at least once a week.
Poor customer service (Impossible to get a timely response from account managers and when they did respond, they were always looking into solutions, but rarely provided solutions)

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
No benefits realized with this software.
Decent
What do you like best about the product?
It is clean platform and if you are familiar with other similar services you'll easily navigate through the software
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes when we go to search contacts, they are not up to date. After multiple issues raised to customer service, we never feel like we get a straight answer, just another sales pitch.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to reach a large audience easily.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make customer service more accessible, sometimes we need technical help, not a sales pitch
Simple, but can be frustrating
What do you like best about the product?
Meltwater has a very user-friendly database. It has supplanted Google News for me in a lot of instances, because I feel I get more results with the same ease of use. You can also set up email notifications that send coverage updates into your inbox, which I love.
What do you dislike about the product?
I never feel that I can rely totally on the results that Meltwater returns to me. Without fail, the other monitoring products I use find something that this tool misses. This is especially true for social media monitoring. I also have had consistently mediocre customer service.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Quick, relatively comprehensive news and social media monitoring. Allows you to remove the manual aspect of monitoring for mentions.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This might be the simplest tool you will use (especially if you're good at Boolean operators), but not good to solely rely on it for your media monitoring.
Review for Meltwater News
What do you like best about the product?
There are a lot of options for Meltwater. With it, I am able to construct and organize lists, export lists and send messages directly through the database. I also enjoy that I am able to easily share lists with my coworkers while still using our separate Meltwater News accounts. The staff at Meltwater have been extremely helpful. If I am having a problem, I am able to email them and receive a quick response. If they don't know an immediate solution, they send it to their tech team and walk me through the process. I have received a few negative emails from recipients I emailed through Meltwater over the year but these rare occurrences were quickly and professionally handled.
What do you dislike about the product?
The database will slow down substantially will working on bigger projects. This can cause all work to be lost or otherwise delay work. It's also difficult to determine if the maximum number of contacts have been reached for a list. An error message or warning would be helpful.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to reach journalists in specific areas of the country or that perform a specific job. Instead of sending to a random list of anyone in journalism, we are able to efficiently target recipients. Using Meltwater, we have been able to communicate better with journalists outside our old lists of contact. This has increased awareness of our organization and what we have done.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
We have Meltwater News because it works best for our organization. I recommend upgrading if you need more media tracking and analytics. We did the trial of their upgrade and everything was great. Talk with your sales representative to figure out what will work best for you.
Average Tool for Aggregating Coverage
What do you like best about the product?
Meltwater gets the job done if you're looking for something to do a cursory pull of coverage related to your company or client.
What do you dislike about the product?
I often run in to technical difficulties when trying to download archives with more than 1000 hits, and I actually had to convert back to the older version of the tool because the new one wasn't working properly. Often pulls in spam, and it's necessary to filter out a whole lot of sources in order to get a clean data set. Even then, it takes a while to update if you change any of the settings/sources. There are occasionally issues with getting support in a timely manner, and in a couple instances I had to send follow up emails before someone finally responded. Circulation/impression numbers also vary quite drastically from other industry-best tools, such as Compete.com or SimilarWeb, so we've run into issues there.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're able to pull large volumes of coverage related to our client and two primary competitors, allowing us to save a bit of time and money because we don't have to dedicate a person to manually conducting those searches and logging coverage. That said, once we've pulled aggregate data, still requires substantial human element to uncover insights and key metrics to report back to client.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would only use if you have basic needs for media monitoring. Deeper analytics would require another tool and/or a skilled analyst behind the tool to interpret the data.
