Reporting and analysis enable efficient infrastructure management and automation integration simplifies IT processes

  • May 08, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We actually use Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) for reporting and analysis on VM performance, particularly what is over-provisioned.

I am currently using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) to manage our infrastructure. The specific functionalities we are utilizing in Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) include the automation piece. We do the monitoring analysis, and we are using some of the automation and playbooks to categorize our VMs as they're being created so they can go into the right security zones.

How has it helped my organization?

The benefits of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) are still in progress since we don't have all the buy-in. Our hope is this type of information will help us be able to right-size these environments with easy conversations. Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) has handled the growing needs of our company effectively so far. We're only a year into it, however, we have started deploying additional clusters for our company and haven't had any issues.

What is most valuable?

What I appreciate about Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) is that it gives us a good, simple view that really plays effectively when we're trying to talk to other teams to show them their VM has too many resources. It's cut and dry, without a bunch of deep dive metrics to give them and discuss.

The impact of the Runbooks feature on automating our IT processes is significant. We didn't think we would use it much. We have many automation products in our environment, however, when a VM is created, it automatically adds the right categories and policies. It worked effectively in the Runbooks piece due to the native integration with Nutanix. It already knew that VM was being created without needing another platform to monitor for those events.

The core feature we use in Intelligent Operations is the analysis of the VMs to determine what's over-provisioned, providing that simple snapshot.

What needs improvement?

I would appreciate seeing more in-depth features in the Intelligent Operations piece. For VM and over-provisioning, we could include financial numbers or estimates around that piece. That would be beneficial when talking to managers in different verticals, showing resource usage and potential cost savings. This might already be possible and I haven't discovered it yet.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) for about a year now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability and reliability of the Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) platform have been consistent. There were some issues at one point with microservices when using bleeding edge versions. Nutanix has done a good job correcting that and I'm looking forward to continued improvement.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Our current challenge with Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) is the overwhelming amount of VMs being shown as over-provisioned. For example, out of approximately 1,000 VMs on the platform, 800 of them are indicating over-provisioning. We anticipated this situation. Addressing it is an ongoing process.

How are customer service and support?

The customer service and technical support of the platform has been great. We don't need to use it very often, however, when we have, they've been very responsive and have stayed with us through longer issues.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We came from VMware, where we had reporting pieces that were rarely utilized due to their complexity and overly detailed numbers. In contrast, Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) presents information simply and directly on the dashboard, making it easier for engineers and managers to understand without requiring platform changes for reports.

How was the initial setup?

I can't say much about the deployment as it's just kind-of there. It doesn't add anything in complexity to how we put it out. It's just part of the platform and doesn't seem to take any significant overhead that we've seen. So the implementation seemed pretty simple and straightforward.

What was our ROI?

The biggest potential return on investment with the platform will be through right-sizing VMs. As our data center gets smaller, we will be able to utilize space more efficiently, and the reporting capabilities will be crucial in achieving this.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Regarding pricing, setup costs, and licensing, the company seems satisfied. It caught us off guard since we didn't realize that type of reporting was part of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM), which we had received during our POC. When we went to deploy to production, we realized we needed to add it, however, the add-on cost seemed reasonable and management approved it.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I did not consider other solutions before choosing Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM). We saw it as part of the POC with Nutanix and recognized it as a valuable feature of the whole platform.

What other advice do I have?

Self-service hasn't improved our ability to manage, deploy, and scale applications yet as we haven't used that piece. We haven't had a need for it historically, and being in our first two years with Nutanix, it will be something to explore in the future.

I haven't seen measurable outcomes from using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM), such as reduced costs or a more efficient IT team, as we don't have metrics to measure at this point.

The solution's cost visibility feature has not affected our company's budgeting or cost management since we haven't implemented that functionality yet.

On a scale of one to ten, I rate this solution an eight.

One-click upgrades and intuitive UI significantly reduce time spent on manual processes

  • May 08, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use cases for Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) include working with databases, batch processes, UCS, and a lot of in-house homegrown applications. Before selecting Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM), we were users of a different product and ran both products side by side for a while.

Almost three years ago, we decided to transition all of our database usage, applications, batch processes, and UCS over to Nutanix.

How has it helped my organization?

In addition to the time savings, my ability to optimize the placement of the VMs and their sizing concerning compute and memory is very good. Being able to avoid purchasing more hardware or utilize solutions in tighter spaces has freed up resources for other projects, which obviously saves money due to reduced hardware needs and space on the data center, which we don't have to rent as much.

What is most valuable?

The features of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) that I find most valuable for my infrastructure team include one-click upgrades that the NCM provides, which is a super time saver for our organization. It also allows my team, the infrastructure team, to get our time after hours and our weekends back. Additionally, the monitoring is very helpful for daily check-ins. I go in every morning, check Prism, and see if it has any critical warnings that I need to look at or send up to somebody. The UI is very intuitive for the most part.

We don't have to handhold and manually do software updates or firmware updates. We can select them, schedule when we want them, and I would estimate we can now spend 75% to 85% of the man-hours that we used to spend on those tasks on feature requests instead.

The Runbook feature of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) has impacted our IT processes by rightsizing and optimizing our environment, which helps in optimizing the amount of resources we've been using so that we don't have to over-purchase hardware. It's allowed us to get a lot more density of guest VMs onto our existing platforms, ultimately saving money in the long run. I would approximate the cost savings to be in the 20% to 25% range since we can optimize our resources and avoid the need to purchase more hardware or reuse resources in the infrastructure from one implementation.

We do some automation for right-sizing VMs. We don't do a lot more with that. We're still in the process of migrating from a different hypervisor and refreshing our older infrastructure.

What needs improvement?

In terms of how Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) can be improved, there are some functionalities in the newer releases and upgrades that are not available in Prism Central, which lacks the newest versions. A few years back, we faced some issues with Prism Central, so it would be beneficial to align the upgrades for the newer releases.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) for six and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would assess the stability and reliability of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) as very good, as we've had almost no issues. In six years, I can recall just a couple instances, three in total, where we've experienced outages due to hardware or firmware issues during upgrades, but none of these incidents noticeably affected us. We've never had any downtime related to the Nutanix product itself.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) scales with our organization's growing needs, as we've expanded from three clusters to ten clusters in a matter of six years. Some of that growth is due to our need to expand, but it's also a transition away from the traditional three-tier solution.

How are customer service and support?

I evaluate Nutanix support as very good. Having worked in IT for 30 years, I consider it the best support team. One of my early calls was about a host problem caused by a firmware update that corrupted the ESXi implementation. The support agent stayed online with me until we got the host operational again, which is something you don't often see.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before selecting Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM), we were users of a different product and ran both products side by side for a while. Almost three years ago, we decided to transition all of our database usage, applications, batch processes, and UCS over to Nutanix. The main factors that prompted our move to Nutanix were mostly ease of administration and the significant amount of time it gave back to our team, allowing us to concentrate on other projects.

How was the initial setup?

I would describe my experience with deploying Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) as very simple. When I first started at the company, we had a third-party consulting team that helped us implement the first three clusters with Nutanix. Now, with ten clusters in total, we've taken over the remaining implementations ourselves, so it's relatively easy to implement.

What about the implementation team?

When I first started at the company, we had a third-party consulting team that helped us implement the first three clusters with Nutanix.

What was our ROI?

With Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) the time we save in man-hours is probably around 75% to 85%. The ability to optimize the placement and sizing of VMs have also attributed to a positive ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't directly deal with pricing aspects of the solution.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to other companies looking into purchasing Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) would be to certainly take a hard look at it since it has been a real value addition for our company. It saves our infrastructure team a lot of time and allows us to focus on other projects.

There has been some actionable feedback for Nutanix as I've noticed that after COVID, the time for resolution has dropped. This is partly due to the fact that there's so much more to the product than there used to be, leading to greater complexity. While support remains better than anyone else's, I hope the resolution times can improve back to what they once were.

On a scale of one to ten, I rate this solution a nine.

Enables us to optimize our workload and manage our day-to-day operations

  • May 08, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) tool to do the data analysis of all of the VMs that we have provisioned, and just report and support our decisions.

We primarily use it to measure the efficiency of our organization. We have a large application, so we have to keep an eye on that. We closely monitor storage, memory, CPU, and all these different resources and their operating efficiencies.

We haven't used the cost governance feature yet, and it's something we're looking to implement in the future, but it's not a use case for us right now.

How has it helped my organization?

It allows us to optimize our workload and manage our day-to-day operations.

The runbooks feature has had a significant impact on automating our IT process as we are getting ready to add new hardware to our clusters, and it will allow us to see how much we need to add and where we need to add it in terms of our growing infrastructure.

Self-service has improved our ability to manage, deploy, or scale our applications as we allow our software development infrastructure team to use self-service to deploy their own VMs or manage their own VMs. They don't always have to reach out to us. While we control the base hardware, they still get to manage the VMs.

It has helped my team have visibility into security posture across our infrastructure as we work with our Cyber Ops team to provide them information out of it so that they can come back and provide us with recommendations.

What is most valuable?

What I like the most about it is how intuitive it is to use. It's easy for users to use and provides the data we want.

The core feature I mainly use in Intelligent Operations is the cluster runway and the analytics features. I have not faced any challenges with ease of use with the product itself.

What needs improvement?

The biggest issue we've run into is not being able to quickly share information. More sharing features outside of just the standard reporting, where I can export something to a PDF, would be more helpful.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) for about a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability and reliability of the platform have been great, as we use it all the time and really show the use cases.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Right now, Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) matches where we're at as an organization, and I don't necessarily know for the future as I don't see us having a huge amount of growth from where we are now.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate their technical support a nine out of ten because I've never had an issue reaching out to support and getting any issues resolved very quickly. Even the technical account manager has helped whenever I have issues, making it easy to escalate and get somebody to take care of it.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've only ever worked with Nutanix.

What was our ROI?

The biggest return on investment when using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) for me is optimizing our resources so that we are not buying hardware or additional resources that we don't need. We are able to scale things appropriately and make sure that we are using our resources to their best abilities.

We are definitely not going to add as much hardware as we originally thought, just because we were able to scale back some of the VMs and resources that we were using.

I have spent quite a bit of time with the tool myself, getting measures for efficiency, and it's probably helped us to be 10%-15% more efficient on average in information gathering.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are getting ready to do a renewal, and that's been one of the topics that has arisen around the licensing and the cost of it. At the end of the day, the product justifies the cost, and it leads to a conversation with management over whether we actually need this feature and if there are any use cases for why we would want to keep it.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not consider other solutions before choosing Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM). We went straight to Nutanix, that's what we wanted.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) a nine out of ten, as I don't have a lot of comparison. I don't rate anything a ten, but what could make it a ten is me learning how to better use the tool and ensuring that I'm using it the way that I need to. It falls back on me not understanding the full breadth and scale of the tool. As we're not using cost governance and the cost visibility yet, it's hard for me to say whether or not those are helpful.

Enhancement of compliance and management across hybrid environments with ease of integration

  • May 08, 2025
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

We are currently using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) for our on-prem infrastructure.

Our main use cases for Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) come from being a company that is split half and half between federal and commercial work. We needed something that could be highly compliant while also giving us flexibility across the different clouds that we provide. The primary use case is the compliance piece, making sure that we're managing, securing, and locking down the system the way that we need to keep our customers happy.

What is most valuable?

We did a test implementation of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM), pulling it in and using it to start monitoring our systems. It was quite easy to pull it in and start using it, which we appreciated. Some of the other systems we looked at weren't quite as intuitive with their setup.

The impact on our company is what we hope to get from it if we move forward - higher efficiencies from an easier single pane of glass management perspective on securing compliance of our multi-cloud environment. I appreciate that we can view both the commercial and the gov cloud or FedRAMP, government environments from the same perspective. This makes it easier for our teams as they're not learning two different dashboards or ways to look at things, which we had to do in the past.

The impact of the Runbooks feature on automating our IT processes with Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) hasn't been significant yet. I am looking forward to the Runbooks feature having an impact since I'm a fan of automation wherever possible. Going across environments and being able to automate and execute the same behavior reliably across both AWS and Azure and across different commercial and gov cloud environments would be very useful.

What needs improvement?

Regarding how Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) can be improved, we haven't seen any gaping holes yet. The improvement we're always looking for is agentive behavior, specifically regarding automation and the AI side of things. We might not have seen it yet since we're not that far in our system, however, getting that agentive behavior so we can reliably have the system do things based on parameters and guidelines without our engineers having to do more than verify what was done would be super valuable. Our team is pretty small, so any efficiency we can give them with that kind of capability is better.

What could make Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) a ten would be tighter integration of the agentic behavior. That's the main thing I'd love to see pulled in more, though this might just be because we haven't tried the AI features yet.

For how long have I used the solution?

We're currently in the evaluation phase.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability and reliability of the Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) platform have been excellent, as we have had zero outages. It has been very reliable and very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Regarding the scalability of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) with the growing needs of our company, I don't expect that we'll have any problems with scale given the size of our environment, however, it's too early to know for sure.

How are customer service and support?

The matter of customer service and technical support is better addressed by my team. I haven't reached out to them yet.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are currently in the evaluation phase of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM). We've been using vSphere and CloudHealth, however, want to move away from them due to their licensing changes. We were looking at other options that were multi-cloud, hybrid cloud, and on-prem solutions. CloudHealth and another product covered one small piece of work, which we're phasing out now before choosing Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM).

How was the initial setup?

We always give it a few weeks to start to do its thing. We've been able to start getting some information and have been playing around with it. It's been very easy to get started and get moving on the pilot.

What was our ROI?

The biggest return on investment will be getting away from VMware products. Additionally, the ease of use, single pane perspective across the on-prem, commercial and government environments is really important and super valuable. The consistent behavior across different environments is also valuable. Anything that reduces bandwidth and reduces the brain work that our teams have to do to maintain systems across all environments is time-saving and cost-saving.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I did consider other solutions before choosing Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) and am still considering alternatives, though I'd rather not discuss specifics.

What other advice do I have?

The specific functionalities we have utilized mainly focus on security and compliance monitoring, getting our arms wrapped around everything we have across Azure and AWS. We're also looking at pulling into the next stage of the pilot, the cost management side, because we definitely have some inefficiencies there.

Our engineers who have been involved in our pilot and assessment have been pretty happy so far. Engineers are fundamentally efficiency-oriented - we prefer to have the easy button as much as possible. We prefer the complexity hidden for us, and there's definitely the perception that this product does that.

We have used the NCM Security Central, which has helped my team have visibility into our security posture across our infrastructure. Regarding cost governance features, it's too early to tell about their impact on cloud expenditure visibility.

We have seen enough measurable outcomes to make us want to continue down the process we've started. The factors that make the team lean towards this solution include the ability to be compliant and to manage and monitor compliance across different environments.

It is a hybrid environment, and we're using the Azure service offering.

I would rate Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) a solid eight out of ten. The solution has been very easy to start up and very easy to get moving on the pilot. The low latency, low bandwidth has been good so far, and it has been a good experience overall.

Self-service functionality and automation have significantly reduced our deployment time

  • May 07, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

My main use cases for Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) are for managing resources in the cloud.

I'm currently using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) to manage my infrastructure. I'm using the self-service functionality from Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM).

How has it helped my organization?

We are using the runbooks feature to help automate management with very simple runbooks. The impact of this feature is that it automates deployment, so we don't have to do any manual processes to provision machines or configurations. This frees up our engineers to focus on other projects without having to manage and operate requests hands-on.

We use cost governance. This feature helps us manage costs and avoid cost overruns. It also gives us the ability to do a showback to the business, showing how much it's costing.

It allows us to forecast budgets for projects much more easily than what we had before, which was nothing.

What is most valuable?

It's easy to use. Self-service is beneficial because it's easier for developers to assign themselves resources. It's easy to control resources and govern the resources, and it frees up support to focus on other things without having to help developers. It allows developers to self-service on their own.

It saves time. I don't have any metrics, but typically, before, a developer requesting resources would have a three to five-day turnaround time, sometimes even longer. Now they have the ability to self-deploy on their own, which makes it immediate instead of waiting three to five business days.

What needs improvement?

Our requirements are very simple. There is nothing not working for us. It's not complex, but the benefits are that it's really easy to use. We are probably the customer who has the least number of problems. However, costs are always a concern.

I've been using Nutanix for a long time, and other complaints I had in the past were that their ecosystem with other OEM partners was more limited. It's good that they've grown and expanded to other vendors and OEMs. We were an HPE shop, so it was good when they brought in HPE as an OEM. It was very important for us, and it's good to see that they're extending that. Our Nutanix is on HPE.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I don't believe we've had any significant issues with the stability and reliability of the Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) platform. Any issues were minor, just something that goes with learning the product and how it works. Nothing major has caused downtime.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) scales well. We haven't had any growing pains with it.

The process of expanding its usage is smooth in getting the different teams on board with how it works, so it's primarily about training.

How are customer service and support?

I find Nutanix support to be great, excellent. I have nothing bad to say about it. Nobody is perfect, but I'd rate it a nine.

The handoff with support and the knowledge of the support engineer is significantly better than experience with other vendors. I've always had a good experience. I'm sure we've had a minor issue here and there with getting issues to the right person, but nothing specific comes to mind.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were already a Nutanix shop, so we weren't really looking at other solutions. It was something that we were aware of and had a use case for. Outside of that, we were looking at Terraform or some other scripting processes, but it made more sense to leverage Nutanix's integrated solutions.

How was the initial setup?

The challenges that we had were mostly on our side, getting the runbooks set up properly. There was nothing really with the technology that was a challenge. We have a hybrid deployment model. Most of our workloads are on-prem. We mostly focus on on-prem workloads, but we do have use cases in Azure.

What was our ROI?

Playbooks and automation definitely freed up engineer time. This allows us to focus on other projects and not have to get hands-on, reducing operational costs.

It goes in cycles, but depending on the project, Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) has freed up 40-50 hours per project in terms of deployment. That's a week's worth of work that could be done for something else.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing is always a hot topic. We haven't had any challenges around licensing and costs. Everything was within budget and our expectations. It's a hot topic because renewals and licensing costs are high. Managing costs is always a concern, as we're always being asked to do more with less.

The product is great, and I have no regrets using Nutanix. I would do it all over again. I'm not looking at any other platforms, but costs are always a concern. It's not cheap, but there are savings and return on investment when coming from a non-Nutanix shop. If you're coming in as a new customer, greenfield, it's great. If you're migrating away from something three-tier architecture where you already have storage platforms, it's harder to justify the costs because you already invested in something else.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) an eight out of ten, as everything can always be improved, but nothing really comes to mind.

I would recommend it to other companies considering Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) to make sure they do proper planning upfront and understand their use cases. A lot of times, our challenges are that our internal customers, who are going to be consuming, don't know their requirements, which slows down and potentially produces a poor experience. Ensure that you understand the requirements and do proper planning with the customer.

Comprehensive management through a single, intuitive interface reduces tool usage

  • May 07, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

My main use cases for Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) involve managing infrastructure and looking at dashboarding performances.

I am currently using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) to manage my infrastructure.

The specific functionalities I am utilizing with Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) include offsite replications, between site replication, load balancing, and regular management creations.

We haven't started with self-service, Intelligent Operations, or cost governance yet; we haven't looked at that too much.

What is most valuable?

What I find most valuable about Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) is the single pane of glass.

A single pane of glass means one place to go look at everything.

The biggest benefit Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) has provided my company is a more overall encompassing area where I can go look at and review workloads and get an early jump on any indications of problems.

The biggest case and need regarding full stack visibility for operations to create a single pane for the entire virtual infrastructure, including both Nutanix and non-Nutanix environments, is monitoring, alerts, and reporting.

It makes it easier than having to find the individual servers, and I can have an executive summary for myself.

It cuts down the number of tools that we have to use or go to, allowing us to see anything else that's going on while we're managing our infrastructure, providing a single place where we could start consolidating.

What needs improvement?

I don't know yet how Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) can be improved; I'm still new enough into it and still reviewing it.

For the use case that I use Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) for, it works fine and great; I don't have a specific improvement aside from general feedback.

Better AI would be a feature I would want to see in the next update.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) for about a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability and reliability of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) have been excellent; we've never had a problem, and we were pleasantly surprised with how well the image upgrades went.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) has not had any issues scaling with the growing needs of my company; it's been fine.

I don't know that we're big enough to see that kind of scalability or improvement with self-service because we're such a small shop, but it is nice not having to call an engineer.

How are customer service and support?

The customer service and technical support I've received have been phenomenal.

I would rate the customer service a 10, absolutely.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Having come from a VMware shop straight over to pure Nutanix, I find Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) to be more intuitive.

The biggest differences between VMware, Cisco, and Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) is the UI; I feel the UI is more intuitive across the board with Nutanix, and that is the biggest difference.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) was seamless and perfect.

What about the implementation team?

Nutanix sent their partner to help cut us over and assist with the transition, which was flawless.

What was our ROI?

We actually saw a decrease in our budgeting and cost management coming from VMware over to Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM), with a year-over-year decrease of about 10% to 15%.

For me, the biggest return on investment when using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) is product stability, having everything in an all-in-one package with cloud availability there and not having to manage multiple tools.

I've seen more efficient IT management from using Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM), with efficiency improvements increased by about 10 to 15%.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Better pricing would help improve Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM).

Having come from a competitor, I appreciate the pricing model of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM); it's very easy to understand, so I wouldn't change anything.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I didn't consider another solution before adopting Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM).

What other advice do I have?

NCM Security Central has helped my team have visibility into our security posture across our infrastructure.

We're just now exploring low-code automation driving remediations, such as Xplay or Crossplay, since we've only had Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) for about a year.

The cost governance feature gives me a projected path, allowing me to get ahead of potential cost escalations and understand why they may be happening. I can better manage my budgeting standpoint for the next year and stay on top of those costs.

It's another tool for managing multi-cloud costs; I use it in the same aspect as everything else, as a report I can review to future plan my organization's costs.

Overall, I would rate Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) a nine.

A world-class solution that helps us to have almost 100% uptime

  • May 23, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We have a platform of about 300 virtual machines, and most of the technology was very old, pre-existing legacy technology. We needed a world-class hyperconverged solution that would provide us with the ease of migrating these virtual machines and allow us to have a hybrid platform in the long term. We wanted some of the things in the private cloud and other things in AWS, which is the public cloud that we have.

How has it helped my organization?

We have a local partner and all the support from the vendor. It has been a remarkable experience. The product is very easy to use, and the roadmap has been executed transparently. The administration has been quite fast. There are many things that were totally neglected, and we had to open some support cases. They have been responded to quickly and in a timely manner. It has been a success.

We have much better performance and efficiency. The uptime of the servers has also increased a lot. We have practically zero outages. It means that our service, which is key in the health industry in our country, is much more stable and has much better public reception. We are one of two companies that provide these transactional services so that people can receive discounts from their insurers when having exams or medical consultations. We serve more than 90% of the country's population for health and connect all companies that give these discounts or health benefits. Our government has a plan with an entity called Fonasa. It is the National Health Fund, and it provides health financing services to practically the entire country. We make the connections between hospitals, clinics, and this National Health Fund to give online discounts at the time of care. Therefore, the uptime has to be very close to 100%, and this solution has helped us get very close to that number.

In my country, we have very good communications technology and data transmission speeds, but when we have a platform that is out of our reach, such as a regional AWS, we always have latency problems. There are speed problems. At times, there are crashes, micro outages, etc. A very good thing about Nutanix is its speed and performance. We are very eager to try the new features it has. We started with a specific project focusing on the most critical production and the budget. This year, we will be able to cover the entire platform and all the server hardware and utilize all the features of Nutanix Cloud Manager. We are going to do several things in the short term.

Faster outcomes are important taking into consideration that people are seeking medical attention, and there are many people. When the time comes to make the payment, they access our transactional services through the authentic application by using a fingerprint or making payment online. If we do not have a platform that is very fast, there is a delay and slowness in all clinical centers. When the lower layers that are not in Nutanix begin to suffer service degradation, all the health service centers automatically start calling us and telling us that the service is not working as it should, and people start to get impatient. Therefore, one of the critical pillars for what we do is that all the processing is done very fast.

Using Nutanix Cloud Manager’s built-in playbooks freed up time for our IT team to focus on other tasks or projects. One of the reasons why we decided on this solution was the amount of prior knowledge that exists. It is not only in terms of the knowledge base and the use cases of other clients but also in terms of everything that helps you. There are pre-built capabilities to make your operations much faster and spend a lot less man hours to manage. We have managed to free up resources and dedicate ourselves to more complex tasks. The playbooks also help me to be able to have a backup within the team. It is very easy for anyone to take the playbooks and apply them, and I can dedicate myself to other things.

In terms of time savings, at first, there were less time savings because we had to "oil the wheel", but now, I have been able to relieve 25% to 30% of people's burden. When we manage very old legacy platforms, we need a lot of specific knowledge and a lot of hours because what we do takes time. If I need to create a machine, I have to load a backup. It takes a long time. I lose a lot of time while the person is monitoring the process. On the other hand, with Nutanix Cloud Manager, it is very unattended. I click on it, and I can do other things because I know that the process will finish in a timely manner.

We want to grow, and we want to have more cores, more nodes, and a 100% migration at the end of this year. The truth is that everything that the solution offers helps with this roadmap and its execution. The migration is very fast and well-supported. We are very happy.

What is most valuable?

There is the ease of being able to use templates. We can create virtual machines from scratch very quickly. We can use a script or make a copy. Generating backup is very easy. Training is also available to achieve a good skill level. The learning curve is short.

What needs improvement?

We need to get more training and achieve much more consistent training. There is training, and there are courses, but in local terms, we are missing something that would allow us to have a more widespread training program. That could be an improvement area for me.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Nutanix Cloud Manager for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is as per very high standards of the industry. It is at an almost perfect level.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have not had the need to take advantage of the scalability, but I am hopeful that there will not be any problem. I am hopeful that it will be quite smooth. The product works quite well. They have been on the market for many years. It is already a very solid product, and growth is supported.

How are customer service and support?

There is a very large knowledge base. The response times and service are also very fast. We have opened very few tickets, and they were resolved quite quickly. When we opened the first ticket, we were inexperienced in the support flow. Walter helped us by making contact with a technician who called us by phone to resolve the problem online with us. Unlike other products that only offer communication via ticket, we had a phone call that helped us solve the problem very quickly. That turned out very well.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We had Rancher. We were about to use VMware, but almost our entire platform was on-premises. We had virtualization but on-premise. It was difficult to administer.

How was the initial setup?

We still have a significant percentage of the platform on-premises. We have already migrated 50% to 60% to Nutanix. For the regional services that are in Ecuador, Colombia, and soon in Mexico, we have AWS.

I was there when the project started. I believe that every implementation has some moments when there is difficulty. That is why one has to have a partner who knows the product and is experienced in migrations and initial implementation. In our case, it was not so complex. The equipment was arranged, and the initial setups were made. The IT team was trained, and the provider helped us with all the migrations and environment preparation. They also trained us and helped us to learn. I did not see any problems along the way that made us say " Oh, we will have to replan.” It was quite smooth, and deadlines were met.

What about the implementation team?

We used a local partner who brought me to .NEXT24. The company is called W-Systems. They are a local partner that offered us the solution and through which, we acquired Nutanix.

Their technical staff helped us throughout the implementation, and we have had very good results. Their representative, the general manager, Walter Zunkel is the one who invited me to attend .NEXT24. We have been attending sessions and talks, and we have been able to do a lot of networking, it has been very productive and very beneficial.

What was our ROI?

It allows me to lower the fixed costs that I have per data center. There is also the possibility of relocating the man hours that I have freed up to projects of much more complexity. That may not be an immediate monetary return, but it does allow me to make a better investment of my team's time.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is an expensive solution, but one has to make the trade-off between what you want to achieve and what you are willing to pay.

There is a return on investment in a short time. When you make an investment of this magnitude, you expect a return within three years, but it is much earlier here. I measure it in terms of what payments have decreased for the data centers. I am closing one of the data centers because I no longer need to have those physical machines, so that is a saving, and it allows me to leverage the expense that it has. In terms of cost, you have to make a large initial investment, but it provides a good return on investment.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated three alternatives. We had VMware and the other two, but I was not part of the decision-making, so I do not know which other two products they considered.

I was not involved in the evaluation from the beginning, but I saw the results. When you make a comparison and choose a vendor with whom you are going to have a relationship for many years, you have to evaluate the cost. You have to evaluate technical capabilities, and you have to evaluate benefits related to the business.

I believe that one of the things that made Nutanix win by far in the proposals is its ease, short learning curve, and very natural, organic, and intuitive adoption within the team. The costs were not so high. These solutions are obviously not cheap, but one has to be prepared for that. For me, it is cheaper to pay a lot of money for a good solution than to have to explain to the government about a service that was down for several hours. Nutanix is a platform that has a very short learning curve. Growth occurs in a very organic way. There are all new features. It is not necessary to educate ourselves much. The dashboards are super easy to build. The fact is that it is a world-class solution. I am very happy with it.

Nutanix Cloud Manager's setup, learning curve, and ease of use were important when deciding on a cloud management solution. The most important thing is the learning curve. I need people to start producing very quickly. The integration characteristics, the compatibility, and the backward compatibility with legacy technologies are other important things. The ease of migration and integration is also important. It is easy to take technologies that are no longer in use, make an evolution, and migrate them to Nutanix. It should also be easy to integrate components that are on other platforms or other architectures. These were several features that made us decide on Nutanix Cloud Manager.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Nutanix Cloud Manager a nine out of ten. There is always room for improvement.

The learning curve has been smooth, and the technicians are performing a little better regarding response times

  • May 22, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We started migrating from VMware to Nutanix four years ago, and we're seeing much better performance.

How has it helped my organization?

We had a difficult disaster recovery situation that we handled with Nutanix Cloud Manager. We also migrated licenses from on-premises in a local environment to the cloud, which is much cheaper.

What is most valuable?

Nutanix Cloud Manager is easier for technicians than VMware, so fewer people are needed to do the same tasks. It's critical because if we do things faster, we do them at a lower price, especially if we use fewer human resources.

NCM’s built-in playbooks have freed our IT team to focus on other tasks in some areas, but we also have our own local playbooks. This has freed up time for our IT team. Since 2023, we have spent an average of six hours completing an implementation, which allows us to use our IT staff more effectively for other tasks.

The learning curve has been smooth, and the technicians are performing a little better regarding response times. The only thing that makes a little difference is the virtualization part, which I believe is compensated by the performance part. A short learning curve is important because the infrastructure team is a bit large, so doing things with less time is better. If we take longer, then it will be more expensive.

What needs improvement?

We are still learning about cloud usage and the integrations we are targeting right now at the event. I believe there is room for improvement, especially with the prices, which are not very friendly.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Nutanix Cloud Manager for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We haven't experienced any downtime.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's easy to scale Nutanix Cloud Manager for the cloud and local services.

How are customer service and support?

I rate Nutanix support nine out of 10. We are happy with the customer service.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used VMware previously. It's okay. We made the switch four years ago when we purchased another company that was already using Nutanix. From that moment, we started working with Nutanix, which we didn't know about before.

How was the initial setup?

Deploying Nutanix was a smooth experience. The technicians were fluid, and the deployment had no major problems.

What about the implementation team?

We used the help of EDVAL, an integrator company. I liked working with them

What was our ROI?

Due to the migration, we are at around 9 percent. We are now talking with them because we have VMware things we are going to migrate to Nutanix. There is a migration and expulsion plan, there is an optimal communication process with them. We are talking to salespeople about reaching around 15 percent or 20 percent reduction thanks to Nutanix's approach and scaling nature.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Nutanix Cloud Manager eight out of 10. I wouldn’t give it a 10 because of the price.

Good price, excellent support, and a lot of time savings

What is our primary use case?

We completely migrated all of our data centers from VMware to Nutanix. We were running a hyper-converged infrastructure based on HPE systems. We chose the full Nutanix stack because of the level of performance and the availability. There was the robustness of the systems, and it also looked simpler to manage than VMware.

How has it helped my organization?

The system is more robust now. In terms of performance, some users mentioned performance improvement for some legal applications without having to touch anything.

When it comes to faster outcomes, we are not dealing with projects that need to be delivered to the market very fast, so that is not the most important point for us. Nutanix does help us with our DevOps operations. We can support our development teams in a better way by providing them with resources faster than before. We have completely automated the provisioning of Linux systems that are used to host web applications. We are better than before.

Its ease of use is very important because the team is limited in capacity. We wanted a good partner to support us. One concern before migrating to Nutanix was that the community is less developed than VMware. Now that we have migrated, it is not a concern anymore. Nutanix was able to live up to our expectations.

What is most valuable?

There is less management for the team than before, so there is a complete gain of time. It freed up our staff's time for other work. This is something that is important for our company. We have 130 people in our company, and my IT infrastructure and operations team has six people, including two people for the service desk. We do not have many system engineers or network engineers, so the more we can gain on basic tasks, the more time we have for the projects or to improve our different solutions. We are able to save 10% to 15% of the time or at least one infrastructure engineer's time.

What needs improvement?

The web interface could be improved at some points.

We are currently facing one issue regarding management. We have two clusters supported on different sites with synchronous replication. The central point of management must be completely deployed on a Nutanix system with a witness. That is something that should be improved in the future.

The other issue that we are facing is related to integration. There is a lack of integration with our Veeam backup solution. It is not very well integrated with that, but this issue is not completely on the Nutanix side.

For how long have I used the solution?

We migrated to Nutanix last summer. It has been almost one year.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It meets our current needs. I would rate it an eight out of ten for that. In terms of future expansion, when we migrated last year, we already planned for the resources. We are okay for the next three to four years. We may install a new cluster next year on a third site.

How are customer service and support?

Their technical support is excellent. They are easy to approach, and their action time is very fast. For all the priority cases that can impact production, I can directly contact my local Nutanix team. Within 20 minutes of opening a case, we get a message.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use a similar solution before, so I cannot compare it with others, but it is easier than what we were doing before.

How was the initial setup?

We are using only the Azure cloud. We deployed the new infrastructure in parallel to the old one. We interconnected everything. The migration lasted two weeks. In two weeks, we migrated all of our virtual machine servers from the development environment to the production environment.

It was a very simple process from Nutanix's point of view. We also moved to new firewall technology in parallel. It took two weeks because we were retaining all the firewall policies at the same time. If we had to move only from VMware to Nutanix, we could have done the job in one night for 1,200 virtual machines.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its price is correct.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

There was a competition with VMware for the virtualization part and with different types of vendors, such as Cisco, HPE, etc.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Nutanix Cloud Manager an eight out of ten. Some interfaces can be improved, but its performance is perfect.

Provides the ability to allocate resources from anywhere and saves time

  • May 21, 2024
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

My client is a French company for train travel. They had several servers. They had about 10,000 servers on the VMware infrastructure. The target of the company was to migrate to the new architecture, Nutanix Hyperconverged, because of the costs of VMware. My principal work was to automate the migration from VMware to Nutanix.

We have a private cloud with Azure and AWS. We will also have GCP over time.

How has it helped my organization?

There are many benefits. The main benefit is to be able to allocate resources anywhere we are.

Nutanix Cloud Manager is my first low-code solution. For me, it is very user-friendly.

Nutanix Cloud Manager saves time. My client's goal is to automate maximum things. With Nutanix, it is simple to automate.

Nutanix Cloud Manager saves us time. It has saved about 40% of our time. Time is money, so there are money savings.

What is most valuable?

The convergence between the network and the storage is valuable.

What needs improvement?

The time between the solution's production and delivery is too short. We see several bugs. Many tests are not done before delivery. They need to test it more and for a longer time.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nutanix Cloud Manager for the past two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I had an issue two days ago with stability. We had an image in one cluster, but it could not be replicated in the second cluster. Our both clusters went down and no action was possible on the VM. The team had a blackout. No action was possible. The only option was to reboot the system. It is fixed now.

How are customer service and support?

Their customer support is very good. They are very efficient, but it is sometimes complicated to have someone available during work hours in France. Their support is usually in the USA.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The client was using VMware. They moved to Nutanix because of the costs and support. It was the client's choice. I had no hand in this, but if I had a choice, I would have also gone for Nutanix.

The advantage of Nutanix over other solutions is the GUI. It is more user-friendly than other vendors, such as VMware.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its licensing is cheaper than VMware. However, the price for certain licenses or use cases is not clearly indicated. For example, replication of the cluster to switch from one VM to another when one is down is not included in the standard price. It requires an additional license, but it is not clearly indicated. My client chose Nutanix because it is cheaper than VMware. They thought that this feature was included in the standard price, but it was not.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Nutanix Cloud Manager a nine out of ten based on our use case.
