Great platform for speeding things up

  • February 21, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Easy to work with modelling tool and very comprehensive webbased cloud platform.
Great compatibility with technologies (on prem, Mendix cloud, your own cloud of choice, docker).
Very fast to get to a minimum viable product.
What do you dislike about the product?
Mobile and offline still have it's limitations.
UI editor is a bit complex sometimes, and making the apps look really really sleek is a bit challenging, although the out of the box styling options are also very decent.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Many different problems, from extracting and processing data from backends to a nice front-end, making workflows and processes easier, transorming and analyzing data

More time to focus on the overall project then just the code

  • February 21, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The pleasure of getting results quick and being able to show prototypes and first drafts to your customers with speeds they don't expect.
What do you dislike about the product?
The extendability of the platform. You can write widgets and extra javacode, but this requires a lot of custom tooling, steps and knowledge.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Small learning curve for entry level developers. Quick time to market and fast results.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Keep learning the platforms/programming languages that Mendix is build upon (Javascript, Java etc) to have a better understanding of the platform.

Mendix: model driven world

  • February 20, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ability to visually design a domain model. Allowing developers to quickly create a model, keep it simple, clear and explainable to the business. As the domain model is the core of the application, this really matters later on in a project.

Next to that almost anything can be realized quickly and well.
What do you dislike about the product?
As a low code platform Mendix provides a lot of default elements, however when these do not fit the requirements you have to revert back to coding to provide alternatives. Mendix is working on improving this however, making the default widgets more adaptable.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Bridging different platforms (SAP, ArcGIS, etc) within one organization.
A company wide project planning tool.
HSE suite.

Solid platform for rapidly building business applications

  • September 05, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Mendix takes a lot of the guesswork out of building business applications. They have a very solid framework for creating efficient databases, integrating with the databases and building various workflows (using microflows) to enable users to accomplish their goals. The app builder (Modeler) is very intuitive and makes it quite easy to visually prototype an app, gain agreement, then fully code the app. This process does not require a traditional, highly-skilled developer to get started.

Mendix has a lot of integrations, great out-of-the-box UI components, native mobile and responsive capabilities, and a variety of ways to extend core functionality including the use of Java and Javascript.

In addition to the development environment, their cloud hosting is also extremely convenient and quite worry-free for most applications.
What do you dislike about the product?
What I dislike is less about the technology and more about the challenge it is to find developers with Mendix experience. While there are millions of Java or .Net developers in the world, there are thousands of Mendix developers. They are hard to come by and when you find them, they're costly. So what you might save in rapid development, you give (at least somewhat) in resource costs. Over time I would expect that to get better.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have mainly been focused on building internal applications to improve and automate various business processes. In some cases the ROI is around needing fewer people to handle an increased workload (first application resulted in a 3x productivity gain). In others, the result is eliminating n external vendor application that was simply not integrated into anything else (reducing multiple-entry situations, increasing data quality, eliminating licensing costs). We've also found that we can be much more nimble with turn-around, nor only related to reduced reliance on external vendors, but with development cycles that are typically based on 2 week sprints.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Before jumping in, test it out an a very specific, small, time-bound project. It's easy to do that and will give you a real feel for what you should experience in the future. If you have in-house development staff, they will likely be apprehensive about Mendix. However, business stakeholders will love the ability to "see" the process unfold before their eyes.

Mendix can't solve every problem so be sure it's right for what you're trying to accomplish. If you have a focus on improving business processes, then it could be an amazing fit. If you're trying to integrate disparate systems, it could also work well. If you're trying to build a consumer-facing website or portal, there may be better solutions that will cost much less and get you there faster. So know what you're trying to do and see if it works.

Last thing, it will be a culture change and you have to be ready for change management.
