My opinions on SAM
What do you like best about the product?
I like the ability to drill down to the top 10 processes by various factors such as physical memory, cpu, load, and I/O reads. It also alerts you if your server warranty is about to expire, which is great if you have hundreds of servers to keep up with
What do you dislike about the product?
No details on the 'applications with problems' box, not a big deal as you can click on the applications to get more info. This isn't a big deal as you can click on the problematic application and find out plenty of details, but being able to scan over them without leaving the page would also be nice.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It helps isolate various server-related issues without digging through the event viewer inside of windows. This has also expedited the time to resolve the various issues.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's great and worth the money. From a cost perspective, it saves us money.

Solarwinds SAM continues to save the day!
What do you like best about the product?
SAM gives us the ability to leave the office and trust that our servers and applications are being monitored as effectively as possible!
What do you dislike about the product?
As with anything Solarwinds the cost can be prohibitive to some organizations however it is money well spent.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are monitoring our environment for issues and use the information from SAM to catch the issues before the end user does!
Solarwinds NTA is a good basic netflow product
What do you like best about the product?
I love the ability to use the search bar to quickly find end points and where the traffic traverses across our monitored gear.
What do you dislike about the product?
Flows are "bursty" and sometimes inaccurate. Example: Sampling rate of 1:1 will show the same rate at 1:100, there seems to be no difference. Many times, flows are counted twice. So, a 100 meg pipe will show 200 meg of traffic- impossible.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
File system transfers for some of our critical data can eat up bandwidth. Using NTA and NTA alerting allows us to see visual ques and when traffic is "ramping up" . This enables our team to anticipate or identify the root cause (and proof of the issue).
SolarWinds Unified Server and Application harmony
What do you like best about the product?
I love that this integrates into our existing SolarWinds Orion environment to give a true single pane of glass into your environment.
What do you dislike about the product?
As with many of SolarWinds products, there is a learning curve to truly use the product to it's full potential.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Using SAM helped us monitor and support unique applicaitons in our environment that traditional monitoring solutions weren't able to support.
Incredible tool
What do you like best about the product?
My favorite thing about this product is all the detail that is provided when monitoring a server. One of the biggest things for me is being able to look at Windows updates on the server at a glance to know which servers are potentially behind on updates
What do you dislike about the product?
I haven't really found anything that I disliked although I did find it a bit confusing at first to set up alerts
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This product has helped us maintain server patching and updates, which is a huge plus. It's also been a huge help telling us if a service is down that can effect one of our vital applications. This helps us resolve issues much sooner
Review for NTA
What do you like best about the product?
I like the granulariness (I know spelling but I like this word). To be able to drill down and see what is happening in our county offices is a must when a user calls and complains they are slow.
What do you dislike about the product?
I guess the only thing I can think of is when a user calls and we check NTA and we don't see anything. That can be disheartening because then I have to dig deeper to see why.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Problem used to be an office would call about being slow. Until NTA all we did was have them reboot their pc but now we can narrow it down to a single pc or even if it is affecting the whole state we can drill down and find what is sucking the life blood of our network. We get to tattle on people if they are listening to music like pandora.
Solarwinds SAM Review
What do you like best about the product?
SAM allows us to monitor SQL server processes, Citrix and AD health and custom application monitors.
What do you dislike about the product?
I'm not a big fan of the Licensing model. It's very expensive to monitor all of our SQL servers in our environment. We have to pick the most critical and monitor those.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Improve responsiveness to resolving issues with down/underperforming applications.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Get a good feel for what you REALLY need to monitor.
SAM saves the day
What do you like best about the product?
Customization for alerts is probably the best feature of the SAM product with virtually limitless options on what you can monitor and customization for alerting we've even set it up to send emails to our exchange tools to automate actions we want taken when certain alerts are received.
What do you dislike about the product?
There really isn't anything I dislike about the product but I will note that you need to be very careful about alert-sprawl; alerts tend to breed like rabbits if not properly managed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The most common task we use SAM to monitor for and fix are stopped services and changes to critical security configurations.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure you plan your environment and work with your Application group(s) to determine what needs to be monitored and what can be excluded. Pay attention to the size of your servers and know that the minimum recommendations are generally not sufficient for scaling the system.
NTA is very helpful
What do you like best about the product?
I like being able to see applications that are being used and the bandwidth they are taking up. I also like being able to see the conversations between different endpoints,
What do you dislike about the product?
I have not found anything that I dislike about NTA. The only thing for me that would be easier if there was a better search feature, we have a lot of nodes and devices and sometimes it is difficult find them in the NTA screen.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It really helps when we have a circuit that is pegged and are not sure why. We can use NTA to locate the application and the user in one screen. This really helps get through issues quickly.
It's amazing to be able to see graphically the flow of our network and drill down into areas!
What do you like best about the product?
The analyzer has been able to give us a great window into what is going on with our network and we are able to see the trouble points with the ebbs and flows of what's going on into each subnet.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't think I could complain about anything personally as with most tools you get out of it what you put into it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We can see where we may need to add bandwidth to an area or shape the traffic differently to affect the network in a positive direction
