Needs lots of work still
What do you like best about the product?
Ready-made Application Monitor Templates from SolarWinds and from their user community. It'd work great if those templates work out-of-the-box for you.
Good integration with the core SolarWinds Orion product.
Good integration with the core SolarWinds Orion product.
What do you dislike about the product?
I'm still waiting for SolarWinds to improve their Linux support after 5 years of using their Orion Network Performance Monitor (NPM) + Server & Application Monitor (SAM). One of their newer SAM features, Application Dependency Mapping, which automatically figures out which app is talking to which on your network, only works between Windows clients/VMs and not Linux ones
Many of the SAM Application Monitor Templates, especially those contributed by their user community, are outdated and need manual adjustments before they can be applied to the versions of software application we have deployed. For example, for some templates that monitor Windows processes, the Windows process names have changed and I need to manually update them before the templates can be used.
As of the time of writing, there're 279 application templates provided by SolarWinds and 1000 templates shared by their user community (some with duplicated functions). Most of these are for the Windows platform.
It isn't difficult to build your own monitors, but it's a lot of work to do this one metric at a time!
While SAM is integrated with Orion NPM onto the same web GUI, I haven't found a way to merge data between the two products together, or even just combine two SAM monitors, to produce one chart/report. For example, I've a file size monitor on a log file, but there's no way to put this log file size growth over time chart with, say, server request per second, or with CPU usage. This severely limits the usefulness of the charts/reports.
Worse is the fact that the reporting engine is shared with Orion. They hard-code PDF reports to A4 paper size for no reason, with no way of changing it to Letter/Legal size. And the so-called web email report option results in a mht file attachment in an *empty* email, instead of a real HTML email like those sent out by their marketing team. Support staff said these were feature requests when I complained, but these requests have been outstanding for many years on their forum.

Short Review
What do you like best about the product?
The Simplicity and ease of access to have access to so many different machines. It also makes working outside of the office very easy and secure.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the reporting is very basic and the asset reports can only be done in bulk. Meaning when this is produced you still have to filter out thousands of "useless" information to obtain what you would like.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Great reactive monitoring and great for determining when issues have arisen.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Unsure - I have only used the product as a user.
VividCortex has been useful to determine glaring inefficiencies and misconfigured system variables
What do you like best about the product?
I like the visibility VividCortex gives into our MongoDB servers. It has been helpful to check in periodically (1x a week) and see if there are problematic queries or consistently high CPU on a database server.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the graphs are pretty buried in the UI. This is largely the result of the app having so many different types of functionality.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We try to optimize the performance of our existing MongoDB servers. Reconfiguring the iops on one of the servers helped alleviate CPU issues.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Getting on the phone with a representative is a good way to get your team up to speed with the product and learn some industry best practices. Those insights can help make an immediate difference in the performance of you database servers.
It’s easy to have a big picture

With Solarwinds the dashboard make our life easier. We can see if a server/application is starting to have problems.
What do you dislike about the product?
I would say the way solarwinds count the licenses. Exemple for sql insight it’s something like 50 licenses for only 1 server
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We can see when a server need more ressources.
Great for monitoring many users on private server
What do you like best about the product?
I use this tool to monitor and trouble shoot users access to our private server in a healthcare setting. It is very easy to navigate and accessible. I like that there are many ways to search for a device (device number, user logged into it, time, date, etc), which makes it quick and easy to identify users having problems. The chat function is also helpful for trouble shooting with users that work remotely.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not much that I can think of. It might be helpful to setup up user profiles to match to machines to monitor usage by user name rather than machine name. Otherwise very few dislikes for this product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Trouble shooting users issues accessing server. Also used to look at our EHR product from the perspective of a clinician to analyze ease of use, practicality, and trouble shoot clinical errors.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is very useful for people working in Quality Assurance for their agency as well as IT management.
