Review after 9 years usage.

  • July 17, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have been using WSO2's API Manager product for over 9 years now, and I have followed its evolution since version 2.0.0. I have used version 2.0.0, then 3.2.0, 4.1.0, and currently version 4.5.0.

The product is a real asset and accelerator for managing our API catalog. We rely on its capabilities to provide both external public and internal private service catalogs. Beyond its numerous technical capabilities, the product supports us in managing and governing our API assets in the broadest sense.

Installation and getting started in standard mode is very easy and facilitated by extensive documentation available on the product website.

The implementation could be more tricky if you have special uses cases.

I recommend this product with a rating of 9/10, given that it is an open-source product, there is always room for improvement and evolution. WSO2 is a powerful and renowned publisher, and their teams are always available and do not hesitate to propose product updates if a client need makes sense to them.

I also recommend this product for its reliability in critical production environments, with an availability rate of approximately 99.97% to date.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't necessarily have any drawbacks to address regarding the product.
The only drawback I can find is the weakness of the documentation around version migrations.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
WSO2 API Manager helps us to add more governance into our API Platform.
Also, product helps us to provide external and internal service catalogs.

Effortless integration with REST APIs enhances business process management

  • April 14, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use WSO2 API Manager to integrate our telecom products with third-party REST APIs. We are orchestrating services where our business process defines the integration of multiple REST APIs. For example, we invoke REST API one and, based on certain conditions, invoke REST API two. This entire process is built within our process flows.

What is most valuable?

The product's capabilities for integrating with REST APIs are valuable. We use API key-based security integration, where API keys are exchanged between the REST APIs. This ensures security. In the future, we might also use OAuth-based integration. Internally, the business process manager allows us to define the process and integrate with it. Additionally, the capability to define processes and seamless integration with APIs enhances our operations.

What needs improvement?

We have encountered some concerns with concurrency. Our integrations do not handle high-volume transactions, and when benchmarking, some issues arose with concurrent testing. It is uncertain whether this is due to our system configuration or not. Once we explore high-volume concurrency, I may have more insights into potential improvements.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using WSO2 API Manager for less than one year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Initially, we faced some hiccups during the prototyping phase. However, once we thoroughly understood the documentation, we became comfortable with the installation process.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The system is stable for our low-concurrency use cases. We have not tested it with a 24/7, blue-green deployment model, so from our current operations, the stability is satisfactory.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is not an issue. We find it easy to deploy multiple systems.

How are customer service and support?

The support is good, with well-defined documentation and helpful blogs. Documentation has improved over the years, and support was adequate for the limited use case we are applying.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

Initially, the setup had some challenges, but once we understood the documentation well, the installation became manageable.

What about the implementation team?

The prototyping was done by one person and then delegated to a deployment group.

What other advice do I have?

While I am not personally involved in the pricing aspects, I am aware of WSO2's competitive nature. I rate WSO2 API Manager an eight out of ten. Some AI integration opportunities in the future could be promising.

Enhanced API efficiency with fewer duplications and a straightforward setup

  • November 25, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use WSO2 API Manager for our microservices and our APIs, both internally and externally.

How has it helped my organization?

Using WSO2 API Manager, we were able to create one API and use it for multiple channels. Previously, without using microservices or an API manager, codes and functions were duplicated across different systems. This resulted in significant cost savings in development and deployment of applications.

What is most valuable?

The most beneficial feature of WSO2 API Manager is its capability to use Swagger to define and then populate the API. The security features are also valuable, allowing customization of encryption, decryption, and identity authentication. Additionally, being able to create one API for multiple channels and eliminating duplicate codes provides significant development and deployment cost savings.

What needs improvement?

One area for improvement is monitoring. Dashboards for application monitoring of the APIs would be beneficial, allowing us to check for faulty APIs.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using WSO2 API Manager for at least five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

WSO2 API Manager is relatively stable, although there are instances where it consumes a lot of resources when unable to connect to the API, leading to potential shutdowns.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

WSO2 API Manager is highly scalable, rated at nine out of ten. It can scale horizontally and be deployed on a Docker environment, which is favorable for expanding business demands.

How are customer service and support?

We haven't contacted customer service. We are using the open-source version and do not have the enterprise version.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We reviewed Apigee alongside other API management solutions, however, we chose WSO2 API Manager as it is open-source, mainly due to cost considerations.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was done in-house. It was straightforward and took approximately three hours for configuration and deployment.

What about the implementation team?

We have one senior developer who researched and ultimately deployed WSO2 API Manager. The maintenance is also handled by our team, comprising about twenty people.

What was our ROI?

The use of WSO2 API Manager has significantly improved operational efficiency and reduced costs. By creating one API for multiple channels and eliminating duplicated code across systems, we have achieved substantial cost savings.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

WSO2 API Manager is chosen for its open-source nature, which is a cost-effective option compared to other solutions.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated solutions like Apigee and 3Scale. We chose WSO2 API Manager for its open-source benefits.

What other advice do I have?

I rate WSO2 API Manager at nine out of ten.

Easy to deploy, use and manageability

  • October 15, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The best part is the API console where user can see all the published API that helps in easy to manage, update, troubleshoot errors that leds to saving time and eradicating confusion. Very simple interface, integration is smooth and fun to use!
I use daily for my freelancing activities. Customer Support responds quite well in case of stuck or any problems faced by the user.
What do you dislike about the product?
I do not think any feature which is not helpful, I can give a suggestion that it should have a in built quick tutorial guide, where first time users can get know all process seamlesly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
First of all, it shows all the APIs that we can group together thus saving time and efforts to manually find each API (its response) when troubleshooting for an error or bug.
Secondly, while creating new API designs, one can thoroughly test API in the platform itself as it shows detailed parameters.
