Decent localization tool
What do you like best about the product?
Smartling is a powerful tool that combines localization CMS, CAT tool, task tracker, and project tracker. It doesn't excel in each of these roles, but if you need something that versatile, Smartling is a good choice. It's fast, able to process a lot file formats in large volumes.
It's pretty flexible in how TMs are leveraged between projects and how workload can be distributed between different translators/vendors.
It's pretty easy to learn and use and their customer support usually responds within an hour providing solution to most of the problems. It has integrations with many modern tools and API also works pretty well.

What do you dislike about the product?
The way the parser is customized by adding directives to the source file.
It also lacks flexibility working with Excel spreadsheets - only supports very specific structure, and if you have something more custom - you need to convert to CSV and add directives to make it work.
Smartling is not able to work with folders or zip archives, you can only feed files without any hierarchy.
It doesn't support multilingual view with languages in columns.
Translators mention that it's CAT tool is way behind competitors like MemoQ or Phrase.
The pace of implementing new features is not great - we submitted some feature requests long ago and the team is still working on adding them. And in general, I don't see a lot of new stuff added to Smartling during past 2 years we've been using it. Seems like most of team's effort is focused on improving AI translation, and UX is not a priority now.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling works as a single CMS where all the content from different departments (dev, marketing, web, support, community, legal) land and get localized. It helps us maintain our TM and keep consistency in localization of various products across the company.
Experience using Smartling
What do you like best about the product?
For me / us as a company, cost savings in the field of content localization is crucial. The functionalities that Smarling offers us in that regard (SmartMatch) are of great help.
Similarly, its relative ease of implementation and use, along with a fast support service, helped us increase our effectiveness and efficiency.

What do you dislike about the product?
If I had to name a disadvantage or functionality that could be improved/implemented, it would be to have a system that allows us to quickly and easily see the workload by days/weeks/month.
I would also add/improve methodologies to be able to export/import strings between different translation memories.

Excellent Custome Onboarding support!
What do you like best about the product?
I appreciate Smartling's intuitive interface, making it easy for our team to navigate and manage our localization projects. The highly customizable dashboard allows us to tailor our workspace to our specific needs, ensuring efficient workflow. Additionally, Smartling's robust reporting tools provide great and easy to collect insights into project progress and performance. The comprehensive onboarding materials in the Help Center, combined with the exceptional support from our Customer Success Manager, have been instrumental in our successful adoption of the platform.
What do you dislike about the product?
While Smartling's roles and permissions system is generally effective, we'd appreciate more flexibility, particularly in the dual role option, to streamline the process of switching roles for users.

Currently Smarlting is working on/considering adding a custom LLM step that will help us solve for English locale transformations.
Good translation service to reduce workload and improve experience
What do you like best about the product?
Their translation platform is easy to learn and use. I appreicate the ability to be able to manually change previously translated words or phrases. We use their GDN product, so it was easy fairly to implement and didn't create additional integration work for our IT colleagues.
This also allowed us to integrate the product into a different content management system.
We primarily use their machine translation service and have been happy with the quality of the translation in the 13 languages that we translate. We've also used their human translation option and have been happy with the quick turnaround time.
Our customer success manager has been very helpful throughout our relationship and is quick to pull in experts if they're not able to assist themselves.

What do you dislike about the product?
Their implementation documentation was pretty general and took a bit of trial-and-error by our IT colleagues to figure out how to successfully integrate the product with our system infrastructure.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We were asked to translate our website into 13 additional languages to be more accessible for our non-English-speaking users. We previously only offered a handful of pages in one forieng language. We knew that we could not manage the oversight and additional work required to keep our 500-page website up-to-date in 14 different languages, so we needed to find a solution that could do this for us.
From a cost perspective, we knew that human translation would not be possible for all our pages, so their machine translation option worked well for our needs. We were able to balance this with some targeted humand translation on specific pages and languges.
Since implementing, we've seen increased usage of our foreign language pages and heard positive feedback from users.

Smartling is good but not great
What do you like best about the product?
Smartling is good in terms of speeding up my translations, the context tab is very good. It is fairly easy to add files into projects and to download them for publication or QA into other applications.
What do you dislike about the product?
Incorrect translations that were previously corrected are reverted in the review stage. Annoying TM notices. I have to add ID numbers which need to remain unchanged, but Smartling does not understand this & it is time-consuming to get the same segment to appear in both source and target segments.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling is helping speed up translation work and also helping increase our TM and glossary so that these can be shared across multiple teams in our organization.
Ever-evolving business solution
What do you like best about the product?
Smartling provides a comprehensive solution for your business, allowing you to select only the elements that are relevant to your needs. There is no need for us to purchase tools that we will not utilize. Their customer care team is always eager to assist and proactively informs us about new features or any other updates that may be of interest. As someone who studied translation as a major a decade ago, I am incredibly impressed by the tools available today that enhance our work, improve efficiency, and help us reach a wider audience with our products. What would have been a dream few decades ago is now a reality. I cannot wait to see what next year brings! In our company, we use Smartling daily, and it has saved us probably thousands of hours of manual work!
What do you dislike about the product?
The interface could benefit from additional instructional guides and could be made even more accessible for beginners. I believe there is always room for improvement in this area. Simplifying the tools can enhance overall user experience.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We need to deliver our content to customers in over a dozen languages efficiently. Thanks to Smartling, this task is achievable.
Wonderfull experience
What do you like best about the product?
Daily opportunity to learn more and more
What do you dislike about the product?
I have no reviews. I have nothing I don't like.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I spent a long time without developing my English, so now I'm more relaxed about daily translations.
Working with Smartling <10 years, I can see the progress - but there is more to be achieved.
What do you like best about the product?
Being online is a great advantage for us LPMs and all linguists, as it can be accessible anywhere. Not imposing license fees for translators is also great and essential.
I like having different workflows, but I also feel features could be improved.

What do you dislike about the product?
Not that I dislike, but while testing features I see areas for improvement and, sometimes, it's difficult to get those implemented.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling allows us to use integrations and translate thousands of strings effectively.
Smartling puts in the most effort to solve our process issues
What do you like best about the product?
The translation memory and interface overall is easy to use, if you are already familiar with the translation process.
Our Smartling Team is very responsive and helps us implement new projects quickly

What do you dislike about the product?
Reporting in Smartling is not always useful since we have multiple teams with multiple projects using one account with different billing structures.
Accounting for project costs have been extremely challenging
Issue management is difficult to use- difficult to assign what to do with each issue.
We are facing a number of integration challenges with Contentstack. Missing entries, re-publishing process, workflow routing.
Removing inactive accounts or changing permissions is difficult from an admin perspective.

Smartling is helping us solve our Translation Memory issue. Now, since all of our content is in one place, it is easy to search for terms we have already translated to help create new content.
The AI Translation also shows great promise and we will be switiching over to that for certain langauges.
