    Translation and Localization

Unintuitive

  • February 23, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It works reasonably well, but nothing exceptionally positive sticks out, other than that it's easy to search in TMs or the glossary with shortcuts.

The context tab is good, when there is actual context there.
What do you dislike about the product?
It sometimes groups several segments into one. This makes me automatically hit “enter” when I’m done with the first segment, so I accidentally feed bad translation into the translation memory, since I haven't reviewed the rest yet.

When jumping between words using Ctrl + arrow, the cursor ends up at the end of a word rather at the beginning of the next. This is different from how it’s done in Word and creates all sorts of frustration.

The tiny jobs are not time efficient and it makes for inconsistent texts, since context might show up in a different job. Big jobs are better, where you have a chance to understand what you’re translating and get an idea of what terminology to use and maybe realize things and go back and make changes after a few hundred words or so.

Direct contact with clients is not a great setup. They don’t always answer questions in good time and we translators are more used to communicating with project coordinators.

Good TM percentage matches should go before AI matches. Right now it seems AI matches go first. 100% matches from the TM should also auto-propagate.

There should be an easy way to say “I’ll do the jobs I have, but I can’t take more” and not just “I’m available or not.”

It should be possible to insert individual tags instead of having to highlight the text to insert the tags correctly.

I’m fairly used to various online translation software, but this one seems unintuitive and hard to understand. It’s like it’s been created for programmers who understand a certain kind of logic.

The "upcoming" list never seems to come up, but other jobs do without no warning or no ability to negotiate deadlines.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm one of the translators. It's the work tool I've been made to use.

With Smartling, I have the opportunity to work for different clients on an ongoing basis.

What do you like best about the product?
The tool is easy to use and clearly arranged. There are very helpful features like the "Search in TM" or the possibility to raise an issue with the client directly in case there is the need of clarification. Also the display of context and layout of the source text is very helpful.
The Smartling project managers are very friendly and available for prompt support. There is work on a regular basis, I practically use it daily; payment is always punctual.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes, no context is shown, which can make translation difficult. However, this can be managed by raising an issue with the client. It happens that I receive an email for content to be claimed, but when I enter my dashboard, the content is already gone/claimed by someone else.

An okay tool, but it has its quirks

  • February 21, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The tool is pretty straight-forward to use, once you have taken the training and read about the basics. I have used it for many years and have trouble remembering how it was in the beginning, but I can't recall it ever being very difficult.
What do you dislike about the product?
Translator assignment to end-clients seems to be done mostly manually. This means it often gets messed up around vacations, when other translators step in. When you are back you often need to double check and request that you get "your" clients back. A better automatic system would resolve this.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Free access to the Smartling tool is a big benefit over having to invest in Trados or similar other tools. Smartling is also continuously updated, so I don't need to worry about keeping up with new versions.

Smartling has a great CAT tool and a supportive team of project managers

  • February 21, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have been working with Smartling for 7 years and most of my communications with the project management and technical teams has been agreeable.
Their CAT tool is one of the most intuitive I've used and you generally learn to use the platform really fast.
What do you dislike about the product?
The first come, first served type of assignment for jobs is a bit stressful, and the many different workflows currently in use on the platform are getting confusing. It can also be frustrating not being able to access previous jobs more easily or to connect with other linguists.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As a translator, the main problem is conviviality and direct access to the main tools I need, i.e. a style guide, a glossary, a translation memory. Smartling does that very well.

My Smartling review

  • February 21, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the fact that we are free to assign jobs ourselves, as well as decline any job assigned when we are at capacity or are suddenly not available.

PMs are also always available to help, and very responsive.
What do you dislike about the product?
It might sometimes be a bit hard to get jobs.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling provides me with jobs without having to buy an external translation tool that is usually quite expensive, especially when you are a freelancer. That way, I can have work without extra charges.

What do you dislike about the product?

I highly recommend using Smartling as a translation and localization tool!

  • February 21, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Smartling offers an intuitive user interface that simplifies the translation process for both content creators and translators. The platform provides real-time collaboration tools, allowing teams to work together seamlessly across different time zones and locations. This efficiency saves time and resources, making it easier for companies to manage multilingual content at scale.
What do you dislike about the product?
The potential drawback is the learning curve associated with mastering all of Smartling’s features. While the platform offers robust tools for managing translations, including terminology management and quality assurance checks, these features can be overwhelming for new users. Without adequate training or support, user might not fully leverage the platform’s capabilities, leading to inefficiencies.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling improves the accuracy and consistency of translations. Inconsistent terminology can confuse customers and damage a brand’s reputation. Smartling uses advanced algorithms and machine learning to ensure that translations are not only accurate but also consistent across all languages and platforms. For example, if a company has specific branding guidelines or industry-specific terminology, Smartling can incorporate these rules into its translation engine, ensuring that every piece of content adheres to the desired standards.

What do you like best about the product?

What do you dislike about the product?
Communication is not always direct, particularly via comments.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling solves translation project management challenges by centralizing processes, automating repetitive tasks, and enabling real-time collaboration. This saves me time, improves translation consistency, and ensures overall quality while meeting tight deadlines.

My experience with Smartling over the years

  • February 20, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Useful context during translation; TM entries (100% and fuzzies) and glossary entries clearly visible on the right; integration of issues and client's feedback
What do you dislike about the product?
AI Automation sometimes replaces 100% matches and fuzzies with poorly translated AI/MT; quality checks after saving each segment slow down work significantly
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It help companies translate websites and UI. Its features are very useful to me as a translator - mostly due to great implementation of context visibility during translation which is rarely available in other CAT tools.
