Gold Standard Monitoring - New Relic
What do you like best about the product?
New Relic is the gold standard in website/server monitoring.
What do you dislike about the product?
With so many features, it can be hard to know where to look to get the information that will help diagnose issues.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We implement our solution in a variety of hosting scenarios, some are less optimized for the workflow of the site so it often has problems with how fast the site is responding or it's general availability. New Relic helps us find those issues to make code changes that optimize the site for that specific hosting environment.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you're making a site that you want available for public consumption, you need to make sure you're using New Relic to monitoring the site.

Easy webservers and application monitoring
What do you like best about the product?
NewRelic is very easy to install on Ubuntu systems, only a view simple steps are required. The NR client is very stable and in my experience it never stopped working. While I'm using the free version, NR helps me to identify problems an all my servers.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't use NR for PHP application monitoring, because the reported memory usage isn't correct if you use PHP-FPM.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The server monitoring is great, I'm always informed about the status of my server status and NR has helped me several times to locate the problem.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Play with the different levels for the triggers for the alert policies. It helped me a lot to get alerts under different circumstances.
Great to analyze bottlenecks
What do you like best about the product?
- Realtime charts that gives an idea of application health
- Granularity of data: time spent in database, web externals, etc.
- Browser tracking of DOM ready: allows us to monitor if our Javascript processing is optimized/acceptable

What do you dislike about the product?
The lack of information about page views, to balance the load against real use of the application. For now, we still need to have Analytics to have a precise idea of when things goes wrong.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Identify which pages were really slow in production (which weren't in local due to database indexing/cache/etc.)
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Amazing to optimize application that are already lives, without benchmarking everything everytime. Has a ton of other features also interesting, for people who wants to do even more monitor, espacilly in mobile apps.
Ease to use and understand system monitoring and maintanence
What do you like best about the product?
Displays complex system uptime and performance information in a format easily accessible to non-technical management. Easy to grant and control access to status information. Deeply customizable, both in terms of dashboards and in ad-hoc analysis while debugging issues in real time. Sharply designed visualizations that manage to look modern while keeping the focus on the information communicated.
What do you dislike about the product?
Fairly expensive, with somewhat confusing pricing structure. Doesn't play particularly nice with complementary tools like Librato - is very much intended to be an all-in-one, stand-alone solution.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Used as a primary source of truth for system uptime and performance information in production and staging environments. Developers are able to watch the system's performance for issues while deploying new code, while devops and engineering management are able to look at retroactive performance and understand the general health of the system.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Possibly overkill, but if your project has a high budget and complex architecture or demanding performance requirements, New Relic will likely be a simpler setup and faster path to success than cheaper or do-it-yourself solutions.
Indispensable tool for developers
What do you like best about the product?
New Relic is one of those pieces of software that literally changed my life as an engineer. The tools that New Relic provides paired with their constant innovation have resulted in making me a better engineer, improving the products I work on, and providing vast insight into how the software I build works under the hood. I can't imagine working without New Relic now.
What do you dislike about the product?
My only issues with New Relic in the past have been related to reliability of some of their more experimental services and also with their speed. For a while, certain features would crash and just not work (thread profiler for example) at all. Over the last few years they're really got things working in top shape though. In addition, when things would break, their service would reply very quickly and help us figure things out.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use New Relic to monitor application performance and health and especially as a tool for performance optimization. When I was working on large scale web software serving over 60million monthly unique users, New Relic was the most powerful tool we had for finding performance bottlenecks and digging in to figure out how to solve them.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
USE IT! The interface can take a while to get up to speed on, but there are tons of videos and tutorials to help you learn to integrate it into your flow. Pricing can get really high really quickly though if you're scaling horizontally... We eventually had ~450 servers running and we were spending a lot of money.
Everything you wanted to know (about your server) but were too afraid to ask.
What do you like best about the product?
There is literally no stat too small or obscure for New Relic to report. It has everything you could possibly imagine and their pricing is perfect. New Relic grows with your business from startup to enterprise so that pricing grows as you do.
What do you dislike about the product?
All the option can be inundating. New Relic has an insane amount of options but there's really not much to dislike.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Finding the bottlenecks in your application and make sure you avoid major pitfalls before they start throwing errors. Once you use new relic you can't imagine a world without it!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
New relic basically does everything you need. The only trouble is figuring out where to start and which metrics are most important for your particular app. The learning curve can be quite high but mostly just figuring out how to tailor it to your needs. Their forum is a good place to start and they have great docs.
Very good service monitoring
What do you like best about the product?
It has extensive monitoring for servers & applications. Especially the monitoring of errors is very good & usefull.
What do you dislike about the product?
The interface of New Relic is quite complicated. To find certain possiblities & parts within new relic can be quite challenging. Still some work is needed in the "user friendliness" part.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Being able to see if our servers have enough capacity to run our daily web applications.
Best free moniroting tool - easy to set up
What do you like best about the product?
This is really easy to set up and it provides a really good monitoring service which allows to keep an eye on every services, for free too.
What do you dislike about the product?
Prices are rather high when you want to go to a premium service.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is really helpful for keeping an eye on both the server, the application, the database (and the queries made from the application on the database). It can help to identify slow queries, bottleneck in application, traffic charge, server disk IO and a lot of other items.
When my application was running slowly, it really helped me to identify what's wrong.
When my application was running slowly, it really helped me to identify what's wrong.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is a full monitoring server for your server, your application and even your users browser performances.
Solve problems before they even exist.
What do you like best about the product?
New relic is the next-gen analyzer for your Web Apps, from javascript to sql executions, you will be in control of you app, you will find errors before your users do and data visualization couldn't be any more beautiful. Working with new relic really enhances the way you monitor your apps, and it's ridicously easy to install.
What do you dislike about the product?
New relic is expensive and the php installation is not as straight forward as the ruby one. Other than that, not a lot of complaints.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Performance monitoring and mobile app analysis is a must nowadays and new relic really shines in these areas. We have all the info we need in our dashboard, it's a really nice tool to have if you are willing to pay for it.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
My recomendation is to try it on every platform and ask for the pro trial, it's totally worth it and you will know what you're buying (If you're going to)
Backend X-ray
What do you like best about the product?
Transaction tracing across hosts. Error alerts. Scalability analysis.
What do you dislike about the product?
The UI is a little overwhelming at times.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Comparing current transaction performance with historical periods allowed us to easily identify the bottlenecks in our backend.
