Sam W's Completely Honest Fivetran Review

  • April 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Very easy to set up connectors and sync data with them. Notifications if pipelines are working or not. Mostly a set and forget system. Customer support was good when I had to use them. 14 day free trials for connectors is great, too! Very good for itnegrating with 3rd party data.
What do you dislike about the product?
The cost is insanely expensive for what it is doing, and we had resistance from our rep to lower our plan. No ability to use postgres connector on the lower business plan, which we would be very likely to use. I'm afraid of using it for postgres because the cost will be so expensive since we have a lot of updated rows.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Solves having to build connectors to 3rd party data, such as hubspot, optimizely, and salesforce. However, we don't find it useful for postgres (see above). I like that it handles schema changes for us as well. The DBT packages that fivetran has put out seem great, although we are only using the hubspot one. I like that they have useful transforms ready to go so it goes beyone just replicating data.

Drastically reduces time to proving ideas

What do you like best about the product?
The time savings for our engineers and how quickly we can get the data we need, when we need it.
What do you dislike about the product?
Price per unit of data if you only have a few connectors.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Connecting multiple external partners and data providers in one seamless interface. We've also noticed how quickly our analytics team uses their ui to upload ad-hoc analyses.

Using FiveTran for source ingestion

  • April 21, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We are using FiveTran to ingest data from a number of our source systems including structured and unstructured data.

Fivetran is capable of ingesting data from these sources in the following manner:

1. Historical Sync: Whenever a new data source is added, Fivetran first takes all the data from the source and dumps it into our data platform. This is intended to be an one time activity and cannot be scheduled from the dashboard. However, this can be programmatically triggered on a schedule from a Python script if for some reason we need to refresh the data from the source.

2. Delta Sync: Once historical sync is complete Fivetran figures out what has changed in the data and it brings in those changes through these syncs. These can be scheduled to run at a frequency range of 5 minutes to 24 hours.
What do you dislike about the product?
1. MariaDB: Fivetran is supposed to perform a historical sync and then delta syncs on this data source. Fivetran can currently perform historical sync with without any issues, but delta syncs require reading binary logs from mariaDB. And Fivetran cannot keep up with the binary logs being generated at the source because they are their size. Currently, Fivetran takes about 2 hours to read binary logs that capture changes in our source system for the last 1 hour. This has been raised as a ticket to the FiveTran customer support team and they are working on a fix.

2. Transformations: Fivetran offers SQL based transformations in the tool which has some intrinsic limitations, such as processing large XML files. We’re not currently using FiveTran for transformation of data.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to ingest source data very easily into our data platform without having to hand code the ingestion scripts. This allow us to focus on the more value added work of transforming the data into data assets that can be leveraged by the business for reporting and analytics.

Gets data from Point A to Point B

  • June 12, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ability to have quick replication of data with minimal lag. Automated reporting if data is out of date
What do you dislike about the product?
A full schema refresh takes us 2-3 days and knocks us offline from monitoring up-to-date business KPIs, running updated analyses, etc. This is likely due to us having massive amounts of data (from a count(1) perspective, not size of tables perspective).

There's little to no progress estimate on the front end UI to see how long this refresh might take and you need to enable back end logging in Amazon to see where it's at in the synch process and derive rough estimates of completion time.

The support folks, while knowledgeable, must be swamped. There are times where there is an immediate issue but response times take hours. This has caused us to run firedrills to try and fix an issue when it was due to something on Fivetran's side but we didn't get confirmation of it until a few hours later.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our data is up to date and we can see if there are any issues much quicker than having to wait 1-5 hours to see if a release caused any issues with our users. This was the lag we were used to dealing with before we switched to fivetran.
