Intuitive, polished, and powerful tooling
What do you like best about the product?
I had no issues getting connected to our RDS instance via SSH tunneling via a bastion server. I love how easy it is to change datasources from development to production once you're ready to publish. The editor is responsive and intuitive.
What do you dislike about the product?
It would be useful to hide the Edit button altogether for users who have "view only" permissions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're building tools for our support staff to use for admin tasks that are quicker to build in Retool than incorporating into our own apps. Plus, my non-technical co-founder can build them with just a little SQL help from me.

So much power yet still so accessible
What do you like best about the product?
I love that I can spend a few minutes in Retool as a non-engineer and still generate so much value for my team. It's easy to create entire dashboards and workflows, and you can make such impactful changes very easily.
What do you dislike about the product?
The Retool UX isn't perfect, and the application is still missing some functionality that would be super helpful. Thankfully, it provides so much easy to use, useful functionality that it's not a real problem.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We've built an entire internal dashboard for our operations team to use. It plugs in with our database, so they can easily make changes to the underlying values, view certain cuts of data they want, or trigger events like API calls to other applications from within the dashboard. Retool saves a lot of time for our engineering team because now there's a whole application in Retool that does not have to be maintained by the engineering team.
Excellent tool to build backoffice systems quickly
What do you like best about the product?
Speed to develop a frontend and also the various integrations that Retool allows to do.
What do you dislike about the product?
When the front has a lot of integration calls it is quite confusing for users to understand that he/she has to wait for a bunch of Ajax calls. Imagine a form with 30 fields and each one coming from a different integration. This makes Retool slow and fragile.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Provide a back-office system quickly for the company.
Time Saving Tool with Big Benefits for a Startup
What do you like best about the product?
Retool has a very friendly user interface, and was very easy to learn for someone with little development experience. It is a very intuitive tool. It also has a lot of potential use cases, and the templates are helpful for setup and for ideas.
What do you dislike about the product?
Unique deployment seems difficult - i.e. deploying retool within an AWS VPC. We need to do this to ensure security guidelines are met, but reading through the instructions and figuring out how to do this seems difficult. I wish it was easier to deploy retool for custom setups where security guidelines were strict, or have the option of a retool consultant that could provide one on one support.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are avoiding development time for internal tools that saves our company time. Previously, we would have to consume development resources to create internal tools, taking away from new feature development. Now we do not have to do that. We are also giving our operations team access to the database and tools to use with the database, whereas before they would have to submit a request to the IT team, which would take time and could easily be forgotten about.
Retool saves us a lot of time and effort. The more we use it, the more possibilities we see.
What do you like best about the product?
The best feature is without a doubt the extensive library of UI components. Literally anything we'd ever need is there, to use in our apps. Also there's no limit to the apps you can connect to. You can easily use the API connector to use any REST api with any kind of authentication and it just works! You can even do advanced paging if you want. If you can write Javascript, there are simply no limits. Even async/await works in the script editor, which is amazing.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes, when creating a small error in one of the script queries, the app bugs and crashes. The support team is immediately notified though, and stuff like that is fixed quick.
Also, combining multiple queries does get a bit unorganized or chaotic, if you go too far. But I guess that 's something you can solve by implementing an advanced query naming strategy and drawing out the app structure with all queries ahead of building in Retool.

There are a lot of automation flows and dashboarding solutions where you just want to take that data, show the data and allow the user to do all kinds of stuff with it. We're developers; we are used to building front-ends. But nothing matches the speed of combining components to a full-fledged app as Retool. We managed to rebuild our internal invoicing app (loading timelogs into invoicing software to create invoices) in 4 times the original development time.
Save lot of time by using retool to develop your internal tools
What do you like best about the product?
- Integrations! I was able to connect will all the databases we are using. Even the one provided by AWS (Dynamodb).
- Drag and dropping UI elements also make the developing tools faster.
- Awesome support.

What do you dislike about the product?
The free version has only editor mode so I have to move to a paid plan to get preview mode. But hey, I am nitpicking here.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We had to execute some queries upon customer request, Like making profile verified, etc. So we had to develop internal tools. This is where retool comes in handy. It hardly took 20 minutes to implement these tools
Saved us a LOT of development time
What do you like best about the product?
Retool allowed us to save a lot of development time. An "admin area" was on our roadmap and, after Retool, it was simply removed, because we were able to create every report that we need – and some basic actions like update or delete – directly from it's drag-and-drop interface.
What do you dislike about the product?
Retool will be extremely limited if don't have coding skills. And, for MongoDB users, queries often get pretty complex, so you often get confused and it creates a "please don't touch this input code" culture.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We generate reports (with charts) directly from Retool, connection our MongoDB database to it. This would be way more difficult with "habitual coding" and use development time that is already difficult to get as a small company.
Great tool for creating basic intra-company apps
What do you like best about the product?
Very easy to start, you can build an app in hours. Familiar to React devs.
What do you dislike about the product?
Two people cannot work at the same app at the same time - this is understandable as there is no version control but it slows development a bit.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Building a internal data management tool. It speeds up development as there are no release cycles.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I recommend using Retool for simple apps. For bigger, more complex app, coding an app from scratch might make more sense.
Applicable to a variety of use-cases
What do you like best about the product?
In every company I worked for there has been a constant need for the following: internal tooling, admin panels, freelancer portals, ops panels, the list goes on... These tools are often built quick & dirty and little to less attention is given to reusability. Tech stack for those (non-sexy) tools is often a personal taste of the developer who is tasked to build them which makes it even harder to maintain them. Retool brings a law & order to this space, with its a great selection of data sources and reusable components, building sensible tools is a breeze.
What do you dislike about the product?
Features targeting power users can be improved.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We build our internal tooling around DS workflows admin panels.
Great tool, something I have been looking for for my whole life...
What do you like best about the product?
- Quickly building frontends using existing data
- Supports JS almost everywhere
- Makes fun to build apps
- Quick iterations possible

What do you dislike about the product?
- sometimes still feels a bit buggy
- mobile layout not that good
- visual drag and drop a bit laggy
- editor frontend could be a bit more customisable, e.g. popout the left/bottom/right panels
- documentation could be a bit better

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- Frontends for internal tools, connecting to existing database or APIs
- Previously only tech savvy users could do that by either working directly with the database (tables) or with REST APIs
- Now every business user can use frontend tools to accomplish certain tasks, freeing up time of the techies
--> without making the math, I'm sure we are saving money using Retool!
