Web filtering and application categories provide robust security while traffic remains stable with excellent support

  • July 04, 2025
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

Our use cases include link aggregation with core switches and WAN switches solutions when having multiple ISPs to reduce the number of utilization ports in the Fortinet FortiGate firewall. We can provide link aggregation bandwidth and throughput of 1GB and create LACP for their traffic. The solution includes LACP link aggregation solutions, LDAP integrations, and read-write profiles for L1 and L2 access integrations. It also includes dial-up VPN, hub-and-spoke setup, IPsec tunnels setups, and automation features where administrators receive notifications for any changes in the firewall. Currently, in India, approximately 30 to 40% of organizations utilize these devices.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate include web filtering and application category functionality. The application category allows web filtering based on categories, which is one of the strengths of the Fortinet FortiGate firewall. The traffic is stable and seamless. We have found minimal bugs in the firmware, and when issues are discovered, they are immediately rectified with TAC engineers.

Fortinet FortiGate can be deployed in both large and small organizations. The solution can be implemented in organizations with 150, 60, or 100 users. We can provide solutions based on their throughput requirements, which is a significant advantage of the firewall.

What needs improvement?

I require many more features as of now.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with Fortinet FortiGate for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The traffic is stable and seamless. We have found minimal bugs in the firmware, and when issues are discovered, they are immediately rectified with TAC engineers.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have not gone in-depth regarding scalability, but from economic, financial, and security level perspectives, everything is manageable and better understood. We also receive support from the TAC team.

How are customer service and support?

Support services are excellent, deserving a rating of 8.5 to 9. Technical support provides better clarity about issues. Only two or three cases rarely remained unresolved by TAC engineers.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

When comparing with other OEM levels, we can provide better solutions.

How was the initial setup?

The complexity level is not significant.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

When using another OEM firewall, we can provide alternative solutions.

What other advice do I have?

The solution is very easy to understand and handy. We have customers deployed both on-premises and in the cloud. Our main focus is on monitoring bandwidth utilization and identifying which applications are used most frequently and which IPs are affected. We have separate monitoring tools to identify malware or malicious content downloads, providing additional benefits.

For data center solutions, we provide solutions based on throughput, number of users, and traffic routing from hubs to DC. The application utilization tracking allows us to see bandwidth usage per IP and MAC address, helping allocate traffic shaping for particular departments.

I would rate it a nine out of 10

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Comprehensive network management and seamless integration enhance operational efficiency

  • June 04, 2025
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

We are a reseller of Fortinet FortiGate, so we have several use cases. We use Fortinet FortiGate to protect banking companies, and we use it to protect edge cloud data centers and so on.

How has it helped my organization?

Fortinet FortiGate has positively impacted our organization by allowing us to scale fast.

What is most valuable?

One of the best features of Fortinet FortiGate is SD-WAN. It works very well with BGP, and AD-VPN is also great. The routing features from Fortinet FortiGate are exceptional. For the security features, their WAFs are extremely limited, however, everything else is great.

They are very affordable compared to Palo Alto and other vendors, offering a great solution for networking and SD-WAN with extremely good protection.

They have great features, and I can integrate with EMS for ZTNA and numerous other functionalities.

The networking aspects of Fortinet FortiGate, such as FortiSwitches and FortiAPs, and how they act integrated are impressive. From the firewall, I can manage the whole network, which makes operations much easier.

What needs improvement?

I have several concerns about Fortinet, however, regarding Fortinet FortiGate itself, they could improve their support system. It's hard to get a good engineer to help you.

Additionally, they lack a post-sale process; once the sale happens, they just vanish, and then you're on your own. That is my main problem.

The WAF is extremely limited. You can't create exceptions, for example. You can only enable or disable. You can create exceptions, however, they must be applied globally.

I am doing my first implementation with SASE. With Google, it lacks a lot of app integration and a lot of features that the other competitors have.

For how long have I used the solution?

I started to work with Fortinet FortiGate more than 15 years ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Fortinet FortiGate's stability has changed over time. They used to be very stable. In the past couple of years, they started releasing numerous new features, and things have become somewhat unstable.

From one version of Fortinet FortiGate to another, sites have stopped blocking, and I experience some minor problems that have become usual in the past couple of years. They are working very hard to fix these issues.

Currently, I would rate the stability of Fortinet FortiGate at about seven or eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Fortinet FortiGate has excellent scalability; I would rate scalability a perfect ten.

How are customer service and support?

It is extremely hard to get a good engineer from Fortinet to help with day-to-day operations and problems.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for Fortinet FortiGate is straightforward. There's extensive documentation available on the internet, and they have great support on that subject.

Their administration guide is excellent, and their training program is also great and free. You can configure a Fortinet FortiGate in approximately two hours if you understand your network requirements.

What was our ROI?

In Brazil, the ROI situation is complicated because everything is very expensive. However, we haven't used MPLS for over five years now, and it was extremely beneficial to see the changes from MPLS to SD-WAN using Fortinet FortiGate. Our ROI was extremely high at that time.

Currently, our ROI is more focused on day-to-day operations, and it's excellent. I don't have the exact number, however, it's highly favorable.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise people considering using Fortinet FortiGate to buy it and trust the company; it's a great product. You need to be a little patient with Fortinet itself. However, the product is great.

I would rate Fortinet FortiGate overall at about a nine out of ten. That said, they lack good support.

Integrates seamlessly and helps with real-time threat response

  • May 28, 2025
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

The protection of assets in the cloud was our customers' main use case for the Fortinet FortiGate-VM firewall. They wanted to have an easy IPsec or secure IPsec VPN.

How has it helped my organization?

Since the solution we offered was a complete suite with Fortinet FortiGate-VM, it was easier for them to manage because they have FortiManager as well. The main reason they wanted to position FortiGate in the cloud was so that they could easily deploy through FortiManager. That was the selling point we had for them. Especially for their multiple branches, where they had approximately 60 sites, and some assets were in AWS, it was really a good deployment opportunity. FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer were also part of that solution.

What is most valuable?

Fortinet Security Fabric and real-time threat response capabilities are the main selling points. If you use their Fabric, it is easier to set up and patch things, especially on solutions, making it brand-centric. It is easier to manage, get the reports needed, and implement.

What needs improvement?

In the Philippine market, where cybersecurity is still growing but not yet fully mature, we have many clients who have Fortinet FortiGate-VM or hardware. However, we cannot really position the Fabric if the licenses, renewal parts, or other components have monetary requirements that hinder full utilization.

For how long have I used the solution?

The solution we proposed to our client was implemented a year ago, and they are still using it.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not experienced any issues so far because we use stable firmware and updates.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable enough.

How are customer service and support?

It was easy to contact Fortinet support because we have support in the Philippines. There could be improvement with more Filipino representatives for easier discussion and better language comprehension.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

Fortinet FortiGate-VM firewalls are easy to set up. We have deployed in both AWS and Azure public clouds. For deployment, a day is sufficient, with simple deployments taking two to three hours.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is relatively pricey, but it usually depends on the use case or environment. For large enterprises, price is not a problem because they need that solution. However, in the Philippine market, many of our clients are still small to medium businesses, so the price can be challenging. The license for Fortinet FortiGate-VM costs 100K to 150K Philippine pesos per year for VM1 or VM2.

As integrators, the price has been challenging, especially for renewals.

What other advice do I have?

We also provide FortiGate-VM, FortiAnalyzer, and FortiManager to our clients.

Fortinet FortiGate-VM is one of the easiest and most user-friendly brands we use, with excellent threat intelligence and accessibility. If you have multiple Fortinet FortiGates, you get easy access and better visibility with FortiManager or FortiAnalyzer. They have been improving with each version.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

It has been quite seamless in terms of integration. We find it very useful for us.

What is most valuable?

The features I find most useful in Fortinet FortiGate are its simplicity of utilization, which is very important, and its provision of interfaces to see the alerts and other things. It is very useful. We use it to understand who our top users of the internet are, what they are using, and when they are using it. It gives us many glimpses into the inner workings of the organization.

What needs improvement?

At this moment, we believe that Fortinet FortiGate should be improved by injecting more AI because the kind of threats we are seeing are more ransomware threats. Fortinet FortiGate is able to ensure these threats do not enter, but we would prefer to see more proactive alerting mechanisms come out.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Fortinet FortiGate in this company for about a year or over a year now, and in my previous company, I used it for almost four years, totaling five years of experience.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For stability, I have no complaints; we are satisfied customers.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Fortinet FortiGate is scalable enough for our environment. We are using Fortinet FortiGate in the consumer durables industry for electrical products. We currently have a little over 2,000 users working with Fortinet FortiGate in our environment.

We plan to increase the usage of Fortinet FortiGate in the future, shortly upgrading and increasing the number of users.

How are customer service and support?

For technical support of Fortinet FortiGate, we utilize a channel partner and we are very happy with them. They support us almost instantly. They have backend support from Fortinet FortiGate, which they utilize. I would rate the support an eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The setup of Fortinet FortiGate is very simple, worthy of a nine out of ten rating.

The deployment part of Fortinet FortiGate takes a couple of hours. We decided to go for Fortinet FortiGate because it was simple to implement, it was simple to get the policies implemented, and the interfaces were quite simple. Simplicity was the main reason. The product is very good.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I find it quite reasonable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before working with Fortinet FortiGate, we evaluated Check Point, Palo Alto, and Blue Coat solutions. The reason we chose Fortinet FortiGate was basically because of security and simplicity of use.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Fortinet FortiGate to those who are looking into using it because if they look at the manner in which it protects their enterprise, it does a wonderful job of that.

I would rate Fortinet FortiGate an eight out of ten.

Purchase options enable long-term cost savings by saving on capital expenditures

  • December 10, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I mostly use FortiGate VM for securing cloud databases or internal in-house databases. It serves as the main perimeter firewall in our data centers.

What is most valuable?

FortiGate VM allows me to avoid the hardware lease recycle every five to eight years. I can purchase the VM, lock the hardware cost, and simply pay for licensing each year. This saves on capital expenditures in the long run. It can be upgraded or downgraded as needed. If the organization grows, a partial license can increase the device's capacity.

What needs improvement?

The previous version 5.6 had integrated features for logging, monitoring, and management. Now, these features require separate products like FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer, and a FortiCloud subscription for reporting. Many users are now turning to Sophos for the integrated features that were once part of Fortinet but are now separate.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with FortiGate VM for three to four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability as eight out of ten. Previously, patches had fewer bugs, however, recently they have had more, requiring internal testing to ensure deployment stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is an excellent selling point for FortiGate VM. It can start with a single core and scale up to a 32-core license for a robust deployment.

How are customer service and support?

The partner support is quite low, and the end-user support is delayed at levels L2 and L3. L1 support is quick.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Many users have shifted to Sophos due to changes in Fortinet's logging and monitoring features.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup depends on the hardware. It should be compatible with supported drivers for optimal performance.

What about the implementation team?

I often customize the hardware and drivers based on client needs to deploy FortiGate VM.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

FortiGate VM is considered a premium product, which can be costly, especially in regions with low budgets for IT infrastructure like Pakistan.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I evaluated Sangfor and MikroTik as the main competitors in Pakistan.

What other advice do I have?

The solution rates as an eight out of ten.

It is essential for the best solution to be properly deployed with appropriate policies, and users must be trained; otherwise, it might fail.

Helps segregate the VLANs in the data center, but it needs to improve on the security part

  • July 19, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution in my company for the data center's server protection to segregate the data center VLANs and the other VLANs used in the production, testing, and development phases, including the areas consisting of DMZ and VLAN. We are using Fortinet FortiGate-VM as a software-based tool and as a firewall for our data center.

What is most valuable?

It filters out the unnecessary connectivity that I would probably expect to be connected from the end user site or from external to the data center site. It is also used to filter unauthorized access to sites and to mitigate risks if, in cases, because of the asset policy, the remote desktop connectivity or remote connectivity is not allowed to restrict something. It is used to deal with phishing or something that may not pass through the network. The tool serves as an industrial firewall so that we can use it as a filter more efficiently.

What needs improvement?

The security offered by the tool has certain shortcomings, making it in area where improvements are required. Security, by nature, is very dynamic, and continuous improvement is required. Every time, the policy and the configuration need to be checked in that aspect now, so in that aspect, it needs some improvement, especially when it comes to some filtering mechanisms, and protocols.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Fortinet FortiGate-VM for more than three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In terms of stability, it is stable. Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable because it is a virtual appliance. You can probably scale it up more.

Fortinet FortiGate-VM is a security solution, so users are not expected to access it. It is actually required to protect the network and the environment, so there is no need for actual user access for the solution.

How was the initial setup?

The product's initial setup phase requires some special expertise. The initial setup phase might not be complex, but it requires experts since it is a security solution.

If there is an expertise that is actually doing the implementation or deployment, then it is a straightforward process.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution requires a license. The tool is neither expensive nor cheap, so it is okay.

What other advice do I have?

The product's implementation does affect our compliance with industry regulations, and it is one of the reasons why we prefer using Fortinet FortiGate-VM.

My suggestion to other people related to the tool depends on their requirements because there are other different solutions in terms of cost, efficiency, security, reliability, and security. Depending on the requirements, the tool is recommendable. Fortinet is one of the top security solutions in the market. Anybody can choose from multiple tools in the market, including Palo Alto products and other solutions. Fortinet is usually recommended to others.

I think that Fortinet FortiGate-VM has some solutions that offer AI features. For our use case, we don't actually use the AI functionalities since we want to control everything. In my company, we are the ones who are actually dealing with the product and are just not supported by AI.

I rate the tool a seven out of ten.

An easy to configure and manage solution with fabric features

  • July 10, 2024
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

We use Fortinet FortiGate-VM as an edge firewall for Internet traffic control and as the main firewall for cloud environments. Whether they're on AWS, Alibaba Cloud, or another platform, FortiGate-VM serves as the primary firewall.

What is most valuable?

One notable feature is the SD-WAN, which is a strong component of the FortiGate-VM. The fabric feature is also good, but not all customers use FortiGate's networking components, such as the switches. We enable various protection features on FortiGate, such as IPS and web application security. Most customers utilize these protection features to enhance their security.

What needs improvement?

Integrating multi-factor authentication with FortiGate-VM can be challenging. While multi-factor authentication is important, not all customers have it enabled. Integration with third-party solutions like ManageEngine or Duo can be complex and sometimes problematic during testing. However, high availability works smoothly with FortiGate-VM. We use high availability, and SD-WAN features effectively; overall, the performance is good.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Fortinet FortiGate-VM as a reseller for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is good.

I rate the solution’s stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We implemented it for more than one thousand users.

I rate the solution’s scalability a ten out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

Support from the engineering team has some weaknesses. Sometimes, they focus on closing tickets quickly or asking for logs without thoroughly addressing the issue. However, the support team includes knowledgeable and responsive individuals, especially those from non-Arabic backgrounds.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

Setting up FortiGate-VM is straightforward, but there is a step that can be a bit tricky. After installing the VM, you need to log into the CLI for the first time to set a static IP address if you have multiple interfaces. By default, interfaces will receive IP addresses via DHCP from the cloud service provider. You must disable DHCP on the additional interfaces and set static IPs to ensure proper access and configuration. You may have trouble accessing the firewall if you don't do this.

Issues with certificates and licenses often arise from the distributor, not Fortinet.

The setup process is generally easy. FortiGate is becoming popular in Saudi Arabia due to its user-friendly interface and ease of configuration compared to other vendors like Palo Alto. High availability setup is also simple and not overly complicated.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

When comparing Fortinet to other vendors in Saudi Arabia, like Palo Alto, Fortinet stands out positively. In comparison to Sophos, many customers are currently switching to Fortinet. Fortinet's pricing is competitive, making it an attractive option.

What other advice do I have?

To block HTTPS management traffic from the WAN, you must carefully manage the HTTPS settings. If HTTPS is not enabled on the WAN interface, you won't be able to block management traffic effectively. Some customers require HTTPS because of NAT services and use public IPs. Disabling HTTPS can disrupt management access. Better controls for managing the interface from the WAN side would be helpful.

Fortinet FortiGate is easier to configure and manage compared to Palo Alto. Setting up policies, routing, and VPN tunnels on FortiGate is more straightforward and faster. Palo Alto can be complex, requiring multiple steps to create a policy and manage interfaces.

FortiGate also excels in troubleshooting and logging. The logs are easier to read and provide better classification, making it simpler to troubleshoot issues. In contrast, Sophos is less effective for larger-scale operations and doesn’t match Fortinet’s capabilities.

In cloud environments, we recommend FortiGate-VM because it integrates well with cloud service providers. On-premises, many customers prefer physical FortiGate hardware, particularly with VMware setups. However, FortiGate-VM is more commonly used for service providers like SCC, Alibaba, and AWS.

Overall, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.
