IBM i DB2

  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The database is very easy to use and has great features. The software is completely integrated into the IBM i OS so much of the overhead and manual processed required by other databases is handled for you entirely behind the scenes to free you up for real business requirements and responsibilities.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes working with IBM can be an issue in relation to support or speed in which they can make adjustments to the product. On occasion issue or support calls can progress at a slow pace to resolution. Many people in the computer world consider the IBM i an old architecture so it has a somewhat tainted reputation in regards to getting new/younger people involved with the platform. .
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The majority of our primary business structure is supported by DB2 including our ERP and financial systems. We also have other products that may be used for BI presentations and they also interact with the DB2 database without any issues.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The platform and software are tightly integrated and very easy to integrate and utilize. Based on this the platform requires a limited number of people to manage and the run your environment.

What do you like best about the product?
The stability offered is good. It is extensible and interacts well with the other related IBM software.
There asre some things like paging and table spaces which are non intutive and can be improved.
What do you dislike about the product?
not much information/articles available on errors on the IBM website. The most improvement can be done in adding all SQL codes and SQL errors and adding detailed steps on how to fix the errors
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It works for us where the user base for the applications is not massive. Providing the much needed extensiblity and flexibility
Recommendations to others considering the product:
there might be issues with connection pooling when used in combination with websphere

DB2 Driver

  • August 30, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Allowed me to create a DB2 connections so I could connect SAS directly to the DB2 server and extract data to analyse instead of pulling the data from alternate sources and importing to SAS.
What do you dislike about the product?
It took a while to figure out how to set up the connection and get it working. Especially using a work computer requiring local admin to get it working.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Allowed a stream lined solution to my data analysis needs by allowing DB2 connections directly in my SAS program.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Someone with technical experience and technical problem solving is required to figure out how to use the program. Instructions were spotty and were lacking in some places and slight version differences.

DB2 on z/OS for SAP

  • August 03, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We have over 75 SAP systems running on DB2 for z/OS. DB2 never crashes, the IBM tools for maintenance are acceptable, and scalability and availability are unmatched.
What do you dislike about the product?
My main dislike is there is not 3270 GUI emulator. You have to know how to navigate on a mainframe to support DB2 for z/OS, and that skill is hard to find these days.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We need a database to run out ERP system. We already had onsite expertise and DB2 met all the requirements. The biggest benefits ante availability and scalability.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Just give it a try...specifically versus Oracle.

The database management system

  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The core engine of db2 is the best I have experienced .
The features I love :
1> BLU Acceleration
2> Index Jump scan
3> Adaptive Compression
What do you dislike about the product?
I particularly looking for good GUI tool to ease of managing the db2 database farm .
For example : OEM for Oracle .

I am versed with SQL server , Teradata and Oracle too. Hence i can particularly compare the tolls available for each of the database engine .
With that knowledge I suggest IBM to invest more to develop GUI tools.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
My client hosts many of the mission critical application databases on db2 servers
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would highly recommend other to evaluate DB2 before making a decision for a new application database.
