Learning R and using currently for logistic regression and learning how to forecast category sales

  • December 28, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I really like everything about RStudio. Very well structured interface. Really good resources for help and learning within the interface. It is free and open sourced. You can use built in functions within packages and you can also create your own functions and packages in RStudio. You can connect to other databases. For example I use SQL for work also and can create tables and populate these tables all in R and they will populate into SQL.
What do you dislike about the product?
Honestly I don't really dislike anything about R.But I'm very new to R, maybe after gaining more experience I might have some dislikes.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Logistic Regression used to calculate probabilities based on customer spending and demographic data used as inputs to give coefficients. This was great, because we did a free trail with SPSS which is expensive. I was able to replicate what we were doing in SPSS in RStudio. Currently learning how to forecast for 12 months. Right now we use Excel Macros for this but only for the next 30 days. Once I figured out how to extend to 12 months, it is very time consuming. I'm hoping RStudio will make this process more efficient.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I usually use it for reporting purposes.

A simple to use, modular UI to R

  • December 20, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Having an R console, R code, a file browser, and code vignettes up in parallel window panes inside a single program revolutionizes coding with R. You almost can't program in R without it.
What do you dislike about the product?
I've seen colleagues rely too much on the UI, particularly the plug-ins like Git, without learning the concepts of Git as a standalone software. This limits their ability to debug and fully use the features that Git has to offer. But this can be said for almost any GUI.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Visualizing and transforming data in a reproducible way (unlike Excel, for instance).

Best tool to work with R

  • December 13, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Using R Studio is the reason why I was able to pick up programming in R. It is easy to use and the layout is ideal. I also like that it's easy to update packages and that see if you have the packages checked off to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
It seems like I am able to crash it pretty easily and that's frustrating to wait for it to load back up again. It is a little annoying the way that you have to have the correct library file path and work space to be consistent. Also it is a little annoying that you have to check off or run code to include a library for analysis. It can also be a little slow to run analysis with. I am not impressed with certain graphs and maps. Other than that, there are not many downfalls with R Studio.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I worked on numerous different business problems. I mainly focus on statistics, machine learning techniques, and sentiment analysis. I do a lot of graphical output and have worked with maps before. Creating maps are a little time consuming, although there are a lot of packages and tools available to combat it.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take the time to learn it and look into Tidyverse packages. It is worth having a decent programming background, although it is not necessary. R studio is a great overall tool for R users and there is no other IDE that I would use.
