De facto hosting operating system
What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is rock solid as a hosting operating system. It has no licence fees. It is open source and actively developed. It has a substantial community. There is commercial support if you really need it.
What do you dislike about the product?
Ubuntu had a detour to try and support mobile phones and convergeance. They are back on track now.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Ubuntu to host all our sites and solutions, across physical and virtualised servers.
An essential operating system.
What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is very lightweight. Installation of softwares using Sofware management Center is very user friendly.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is no "Format" option in the right click of the USB drives. A "Format" feature is essential for lots and lots of people.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use it as my daily operating system. I also use it for hosting my websites. It is very straightforward to setup nginx, etc. and it makes a lot of sense to keep the operating system footprint small when hosting websites.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Don't be limited to the way Windows or MacOS works. Think of what you have to get done, and then look at how that gets done in Ubuntu. Don't be limited to the way you accomplish the same thing in Windows or MacOS. You will get the hang of it sooner than you realise, and you will be surprised by the ease of use.
Extremely reliable
What do you like best about the product?
This flavor of linux in particular tries to have always two versions, the normal one that is constantly updated and the LTS (Long term support) that is perfect when you are deploying web services for your company.
What do you dislike about the product?
They come from Debian, and if you are a Debian user trying to move to Ubuntu, they change several of the default folders, like when you install apache is not where you are user to have it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use ubuntu to host all the web pages through apache2 and mysql, installing new instances is incredible fast just by using apt-get to install the programs.

Sometimes, software packages are not in the repositories, or these don't work.

It is free to use, and it is compatible with any tool or framework needed.

Don't let the terminal intimidate you: it is your friend! (And a very powerful one)

Performance focused workstation for production-like environment for developers and wide array of libraries and software for the platform
Ubuntu remains a solid platform for development and servers.
What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is incredibly flexible. I've used it personally for many years, so using it for work is great. I am a fan of the "apt" package manager and bash, so Ubuntu is my distribution of choice. CoreOS is also a great system.

The distro upgrade path is still a little complicated if a user doesn't know specifically what to do.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
A free, open-source server OS lets us save money, while Ubuntu has a broad user base and is a stable, supported distribution.

There are many distributions of Linux, but Ubuntu remains one of the most user-friendly, stable, well-documented versions.

There isn't anything about Ubuntu I dislike - just general challenges of learning something new.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I work in recruiting and our applicant tracking systems all work better on my computer that runs Ubuntu than on my Windows computer.
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
What do you like best about the product?
I like the hardware support introduced in version 16.04, other than that the operating system has the same great capabilities as 14.04.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not that it is a big deal to switch the desktop environment but I would have liked to have seen something other than Unity as the default windowing environment.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Ubuntu primarily for data science work, it is nearly impossible to run many of the applications and packages out there on Windows.

Ubuntu is a great operating system as it is simple to use, easy to install software and it is compatible with nearly everything.

What do you dislike about the product?
- Sometime it doesn't support any specific hardware. Once I was using lenova laptop. Its wifi was not supporting but with the help of ubuntu community I overcome from the problems.
- Adobe photoshop's linux version not available, Web designer need to use either gimp or can switch to window.

In office I used ubuntu as operating system. Its reduce cost of infrastructure. I worked on LAMP(Linux, Apache, MySQL & PHP). I found ubuntu very suitable for this.

Ubuntu is open-source, so you can access and personalize its source code. That's why most programmers (unless they code in .NET or other Windows proprietary languages) prefer Ubuntu. They're more free to customize their code.
