Ubuntu Server - getting better every year

  • January 25, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is a great product, and the server distro is really nice. They've done a great job continuing to improve on all aspects of Linux server, and even some of the historically bad aspects. For example, their adoption of snap packages to overcome some of the problems with delay in the LTS repos.
What do you dislike about the product?
I'm confused as to why Ubuntu (and other Linux distros) are so intent on implementing ZFS and adding to its functionality. It's really almost useless at this point as platform or cloud-level storage improvements have made ZFS far less helpful. If you're running on bare metal or have storage systems that can't do modern functions, then I guess it can be useful but for me, it's too much complexity for what it's worth.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Great open-source server OS that can be used as for just about any application - from low-end, small footprint all the way to high-end, high performance. We've taken advantage of it's LXD support for our DevOps teams, including Docker containers.

Good but not great

  • January 06, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
So Ubuntu is in so many ways the the most likely Linux distribution that any newbie would end up choosing. I did too. It was very good, and made Linux palatable and fun for newbies like me.
- Installing Ubuntu was a breeze. No issues with partitions or a dual boot menu (Installed it alongside Windows 7)
- Ubuntu was very stable (did not crash).
- It was fast even on an older computer that I used that time
- had ample SW available in its repository.
- drivers were not a problem
- Connecting external peripherals went super smooth
- For all problem, really all -there was the support of a very active online community.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not Ubuntu was not perfect and error free. Most of problems I faced were around file and folder permissions.
- Copying files from an Ubuntu machine to a pen-dirve of other external HDD was problematic (access denied)
- There were no high definition players available
- Too many updates would be needed every few weeks.
- MS office didn't work and the alternatives were just not as good
- Customizing or optimizing the operating system (Ubuntu) beyond what the GUI allwoed was trickey and confusing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The greatest advantage of using Ubuntu was a stable system for all internet related work, and it was effectively immune to internet viruses. I did not have to spend on an antivirus and roamed free on the internet.

Amazing OS to work on - A mix of CUI and GUI

  • December 09, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
You can use it even on a Celeron Desktop and it works just fine. Faster and much more secure than Windows.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is really good to have a Linux based OS running both CUI and GUI however of all my colleagues, only some prefer a mix of Interfaces.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Easy to write code in. Much more secure than a Windows. Yeah it is somewhat hard to find all the applications for Ubuntu, however it does all that is necessary.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
- Only try to use Ubuntu if you are into Tech and are also Tech Savvy enough to get a hold of all the functionalities. Because there will be some things that you would need a Graphic User Interface for in case you are unable to learn commands.

A great linux flavour for people transitioning from Windows/MacOS

  • November 25, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
No doubt a great linux flavour. But the GNOME GUI is unnecessarily bloated which is a big turn off for people familiar with other Linux distros. But since it tries to provide a relatively user-friendly interface, I would say it's the best Linux distro for people transitioning from Windows/MacOS into the world of Linux.
What do you dislike about the product?
1. The GNOME GUI is unnecessarily bloated
2. snap is really buggy and resource hungry. I'd say switch back to apt
3. Games are still not a thing, but that's a problem with all non-Windows OSes
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
1. Faster than most Windows OSes
2.The terminal is the most powerful part of the OS and as a developer, I use that the most
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would say it's the best Linux distro for people transitioning from Windows/MacOS into the world of Linux.
