Great experience to record the logs of our automatic ML services
What do you like best about the product?
During our automatic scripts (from Machine Learning services) we send various messages to logging, which then get sent to datadog. This is both to document various steps of the data, but also to show crashes when they happen. Then from the DataDog interface we can search for production/staging services, we can search by date, we can search by key words.
What do you dislike about the product?
We have the logs from only the past 2 weeks, so we can not find earlier errors. But in general we catch the errors within 2 weeks, so this is not such a big limitation after all.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Record various steps in our ML process (so we can check quality of data), but also identify if there was a crash to know at which step it found.
Then build dashboards that mesure the SLO of our services (like what % of requests were met, what computing resources were used).

Powerful but huge learning curve
What do you like best about the product?
Datadog is extremely powerful and has extensive documentation. Some of the UI is very user-friendly. The customer service has been incredibly helpful with setup, integrations, and troubleshooting.
What do you dislike about the product?
Datadog is so large that to new users it can be overwhelming. At times it felt that even to read documentation or do setup you already needed to be an expert. I still don't quite have a hand on the query language for creating metrics; I tend to reverse engineer those from dashboards.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
More extensive observability with tracing, and the ability to consolidate all of our monitors into one service instead of having them scattered through other services.
Nightmare billing policy - recommend not putting in your credit card
What do you like best about the product?
Update 2024 - spend is still unpredictable:
We've since spent some more time evaluating Datadog. The solution is great, almost everything we'd need integrated under one roof. However, there's still no predictability around spend. I asked them if I could pre-commit to a certain number of hosts, and the answer was " "Any additional host you bring on will be an additional charge." This doesn't work for me as I need a fixed infra budget, and I can't have Datadog charging for random hosts we boot up for 2 days.
The competitor I'm now using has a very reasonable pricing scheme: baseline platform fee with a certain number of hosts / units, then a flexible budget that can be shared across all features or a per-feature budget. When you get close to the budget you get a warning, then it's dropped. Super reasonable and straightforward.
Original 2023 review:
We could not fully evaluate DataDog because they charged us for 50 hosts inadvertently sending metrics for 2 days out of the month. This was our mistake - we accidentally deployed the DataDog agent to an entire tier, not realizing this would incur charges. We rolled this back when we discovered the issue. There appears to be no way of having DataDog drop metrics from agents. You have to physically remove those agents.
However, despite multiple conversations over the month with their sales team and support, explaining we did not want to monitor those hosts, they charged us for an entire month of usage.
The DataDog product looks great and we were excited to evaluate it. However, I now have to justify a month's worth of spend without getting value for it, which is an unfortunate place to be. Given the lack of support in helping us resolve this deployment mistake and the resulting billing issue, I also am not sure how much support I'd get down the road.

What do you dislike about the product?
As described in the previous section, the lack of support resulting in us not being able to resolve a deployment mistake and resulting billing issue.

Metrics monitoring
Happy user of datadog.
What do you like best about the product?
Live logs, overall app break-up coverage, trails, CI, APM, monitorings.
What do you dislike about the product?
Its subscription cost it too high with lowest of keeping 3 months data in backup with high subscription cost.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
More accuracy in error tracking.
More accuracy in log monitoring.
Efficiency in coverage of the logs.
More DB storage with less costing.

Vast tooling capabilities and resources!
What do you like best about the product?
We are just beginning to explore all the functionality that Datadog offers, and it's so good it's almost overwhelming for a small team. Really appreciate how they onboard new clients and put together customized resources!
What do you dislike about the product?
As mentioned in the like response, it's almost a dislike that they have so many tools because it can be overwhelming. We wanted to prioritize security and posturing, which they are just starting to invest in. They're very responsive to user feedback, so I have no doubt they'll only continue to grow and improve their assortment and ease of use.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Datadog is helping us with User Monitoring and gathering some alerting for errors, outages, and uptime. We're likely going to scale with them over time, but I imagine they can do quite a bit with their larger enterprise clients.
Awesome monitoring and observability tool
What do you like best about the product?
Datadog has many features that make it one of the best monitoring tools in the market. I like the ease of using these tools and the enterprise support that comes with it. It supports a lot of integration, making it easy for administrators to monitor any services/machine in the organization.
What do you dislike about the product?
Everything in the product is just good and there is nothing that you can dislike. However I would like them to have some training material/videos. The documentation can be simplified a little.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As an organization, we are looking for a tool that can help us with observability, and Datadog does the same. The need to have a monitoring tool to monitor and set up an alert for any running service is being achieved via Datadog.
Datadog is the best monitoring tools!
What do you like best about the product?
We have been using Datadog for a while and we are generally satisfied with the product. However, we feel that the support could be improved as it can be slow to respond, and the payment processes are not always clear.
What do you dislike about the product?
The support is bad, often slow. The help is not enough. Also, many times the prices are not clear and you can get surprises on your bill.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
DataDog is a powerful, comprehensive monitoring service that helps startups and businesses of all sizes stay on top of their IT infrastructure and applications. With DataDog, you can easily monitor your entire stack, from servers to applications to databases, to get a detailed view of performance, utilization, and other metrics.
Good monitoring tool
What do you like best about the product?
Easy to set up monitoring with datadog,ui is not bad
What do you dislike about the product?
i wish there was a user tutorial for new features
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
helps the Company monitoring real time user activity
Consolidated view of logs and metrics from across the infrastructure and application stack.
What do you like best about the product?
Seeing logs, metrics and tracing across disparate technology stacks makes finding and following problems across a microservice architecture much more straightforward. I find it easier than using AWS Cloudwatch to try and do the same.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is a lot of functionality, but some of these areas require configuration for them to work. However, this is par for the course with any monitoring and dashboarding product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows for the correlation of events across networked microservices without manually copying trace IDs or similar from one logging or tracing system to another. This makes it much quicker and easier to see the impact that one system can have on another.
Much more than just logging
What do you like best about the product?
I was impressed with the integrations part of DataDog.
Our main goal was to centralize activity and audit logs of critical systems in our organization.
We were able to integrate most of our systems in a matter of hours:
JumpCloud, Gsuite, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Auth0 and more.
The instructions were easy to follow, and an integration usually takes only a few minutes.

Log parsing could be improved.
The logging format is not standard across machines when you have multiple devices with different OS.
If you want standardization, you must set up pipelines to ingest and parse the logs, which I found a bit tedious.

Our motivation for choosing DataDog was security and compliance.
We are using DataDog as our Siem: our logs are centralized, we keep track of our IS KPIs, and we set up monitoring and alerts as needed.
