Provides a lot of flexibility and comprehensive transaction visibility

  • June 11, 2025
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

The use case for Splunk AppDynamics is mostly for performance monitoring.

How has it helped my organization?

I've been using it since 2019, and Splunk AppDynamics has been a very good tool from the beginning. While I haven't seen many new features, it has improved in various places, particularly in identifying transactions and pinpointing the nodes and other applications it uses, such as Apache Kafka or other third-party applications. It clearly creates a mapping of the transaction. It is also more dependable and reliable. I have also seen a couple of extra features for analyzing the transaction. It goes more in-depth in some areas.

The effectiveness of the auto-discovery and mapping in visualizing my application ecosystem is almost perfect. Although it could be improved further, it is currently in very good shape, allowing performance testers to check exactly what is going on, where the transaction is going, where it's spending time, or failing.

My experience with the application performance monitoring capabilities of Splunk AppDynamics has been very good because it gives me all the data I need and provides a very friendly interface, allowing me to showcase any issues to the customer with ease. The feature to copy a hyperlink to the specific timeframe or transaction I want also makes my job easier by allowing me to pinpoint something to an architect or any participant, who can open it up on their screen and easily understand the issue due to the friendly user interface.

Line-of-code-level troubleshooting feature is very helpful. I have used it a couple of times, and it allowed us to diagnose which part of the code seemed to have the issue, although it did make mistakes and didn't pinpoint the errors exactly in some cases. Overall, it's a very nice feature.

Splunk AppDynamics' digital experience monitoring affects my ability to optimize user experience in a very good way because the results I get often need to be transferred to other stakeholders of the project. The friendly and good user interface allows me to show them what I mean by the results and my analysis.

Splunk AppDynamics’ infrastructure monitoring is very good at correlating infrastructure and application performance.

What is most valuable?

The best feature of about Splunk AppDynamics is its interface, which allows me to see the full transaction, exactly what is happening, from where it starts to where the call is going, all the services involved in a call, and exactly the time it took from each node to each node along with the network delays. It pretty much provides everything a performance tester would need to do profiling of their results.

Splunk AppDynamics has enormous capabilities that allow me to see the memory and CPU usage, along with the garbage collections. In the case of performance issues, it allows me to dig through the transactions and find out what exactly the issue was to alert the architects and developers to address that issue. I am very happy with Splunk AppDynamics.

What needs improvement?

I don't really use AI-powered anomaly detection and root cause analysis for diagnosing performance issues because it makes many mistakes in my case, due to the nature of my work. I prefer to do it manually and be aware of what is going on, rather than relying on that.

If it could have a sub-tool for monitoring Apache Kafka lag, it would save me even more time. There are ways to do it now, but a direct way would be faster and better.

It would be much better if there were a way to search for specific transactions, similar to how Splunk allows, which aids in filtering transactions that show a huge increase in time.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Splunk AppDynamics since 2019.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In the early years, we had a couple of issues. It is more stable now. I don't see any of those issues anymore. There are no downtimes. I would rate the stability of Splunk AppDynamics as a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability of Splunk AppDynamics as a nine out of ten. A few features could be added to reach a perfect score of ten.

Our environment includes multiple locations and multiple departments. In my company, there are many users working with Splunk AppDynamics.

How are customer service and support?

I haven't worked with them directly. I remember the developers contacted them once, and they received answers within one or two days. I would rate their technical support as good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with other solutions, but I see Splunk AppDynamics as a top-tier option, with the rest I've worked with falling far below it.

Splunk AppDynamics stands out in the freedom it provides you to visualize everything. You can pretty much monitor anything that comes to your mind. It doesn't specify a way or how to do it. That's very important for me because it makes my job easier. I can configure it or work in thousands of ways. Along with Splunk, you can even see the logs in-depth. You can see exactly what happened at which transaction and where. Other tools don't provide this much depth or this much freedom to do things you want.

How was the initial setup?

Developers did the deployment, not me. As far as I remember, it was done in less than two days.

The company I work for now has an enterprise solution.

It does require maintenance, but it's not my job. That's other department's responsibility.

What was our ROI?

We have seen a return on investment from Splunk AppDynamics. To understand the magnitude of it, without it five people would be needed to do the analysis that Splunk AppDynamics enables me to do. Splunk AppDynamics has definitely saved me many hours per week, approximately 50% of the time.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Splunk AppDynamics to other users because it has helped me in many ways. It is a very stable and solid tool. It never has false results. I have seen other tools producing wrong results. That's not the case with Splunk AppDynamics. It either works and provides solid results, or it doesn't work and requires maintenance, which is a very important distinction. It has a very nice graphical user interface. It allows someone to interpret things easily. It provides freedom to the user to use it as they want. These are the reasons I would recommend it.

I would rate Splunk AppDynamics a ten out of ten.

Unique, reduces resolution time, and reduces operational costs

  • September 20, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We are monitoring lots of different databases with AppDynamics Database Monitoring, such as Couchbase, SAP HANA, DB2, Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB, and Postgres.

In Turkey, most companies push their workers to work with the on-prem side because the government regulation is very strict. So 97% of my customers are working on the on-prem side, although we have three accounts working with the SaaS solution.

How has it helped my organization?

The most profitable benefit of this solution is that it reduces the mean time to resolution, which is very important for solving extraordinary problems. With AppDynamics Database Monitoring, problems are easy to understand and pinpoint, significantly reducing operational costs.

What is most valuable?

The most beneficial feature is the ability to correlate different metrics from the core APM to the database. You can fully see lots of different views of the pages. You can also measure each database query historically and see the reaction of your business transactions on the database side.

AppDynamics Database Monitoring provides a single view of the problem and helps identify the guilty database query, which is unique compared to other solutions.

What needs improvement?

Based on my experience, some databases like Couchbase, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB require a little bit of enhancement as they are newer and not as widely used as other databases. The limitations are often due to the vendors not supplying all the profiling features to AppDynamics.

For how long have I used the solution?

I guess we have been using it for more than 11 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I can give the stability of the solution a ten out of ten. It is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of the solution is also ten out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

Customer service and support are good. The quality has been affected recently due to the company's acquisition by Splunk, causing some workers to leave and new ones to join. Hence, I would rate it an eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward and takes only two or three minutes to install a collector on an independent computer. After installation, you can use the collector on up to a hundred different database instances. No other installation is needed.

What was our ROI?

With the mean time to resolution reduction provided by AppDynamics Database Monitoring, it greatly reduces operational costs, thus offering a good ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is not cheap, however, considering the benefits and the price ratio, I would rate it nine out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

This is really a unique solution. If you want to monitor both the application and database sides, there is no other solution like this in the market. Most products offer only database solutions, yet AppDynamics combines both APM and independent database monitoring.

A monitoring solution that enables enables you to observe and visualize your full technology stack, from database and server to cloud-native and hybrid environments

  • November 09, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is to comprehend infrastructure challenges when facing performance issues, we can easily correlate them to the hosting infrastructure for the application. Over the past two decades, the shift from physical servers to VMs has led to various infrastructure problems, such as shared resources like disk space, CPU, and memory, causing slowdowns. Customers often seek to determine whether the issue lies in the infrastructure's server side. Additionally, with the transition from VMs to container-based solutions, measuring metrics like CPU, memory, or disk usage in these dynamic container environments becomes challenging. Customers rely on this solution to gain insights into these complexities.

What is most valuable?

When compared to its major competitor, Dynatrace, AppDynamics stands out by providing dynamic learning capabilities for infrastructure and server metrics. Unlike Dynatrace, AppDynamics enables dynamic baselining for all server metrics, such as CPU and memory. This allows customers to establish patterns, like CPU trends every Wednesday from 9 to 11 AM, and set dynamic baselines accordingly. With this feature, alerts can be triggered based on deviations from the dynamic baseline rules. This capability is distinctive, as other APM solutions and monitoring tools lack dynamic baselining options for infrastructure visibility.

What needs improvement?

If we consider the implementation of alternative solutions, such as Dynatrace, there is a notable difference in the approach to agent-based service monitoring. For instance, Dynatrace employs a single-agent solution, which can pose security concerns. When installing Dynatrace, granting the agent ld pro payload rights is a requirement. In contrast, our solution ensures a more secure approach by not requiring root and administration access. While we currently utilize an agent-based solution, there may be a shift in the next one or two years, possibly with the adoption of Open Telemetry. It's anticipated that many APM vendors, including Dynatrace, may alter their structure or strategy for implementation. However, as of now, the trend is towards an increasing number of implementations daily.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using AppDynamics Server Monitoring recently.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable and I would rate it 9 out of 10.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is very scalable and I would rate it 10 out of 10.

How was the initial setup?

It's very easy.It takes couple of minutes only.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's true; it's not an inexpensive solution. Dynatrace and AppDynamics are consistently on the pricier side. However, when comparing with other solutions like Datadog or New Relic, it becomes apparent that they are significantly more affordable. The pricing may seem high at the list or discounted level, but what truly matters is the business value assessment. After completing this assessment, customers often recognize the value proposition and find the cost justified.

What other advice do I have?

In all honesty, APM solutions, including AppDynamics, tend to be expensive, and they may have fewer features compared to other legacy monitoring solutions. I typically advise against using AppDynamics or similar APM solutions solely for server monitoring due to their cost and potential limitations. To maximize usefulness, it's crucial to complement these solutions with other monitoring tools and features.

I would rate it 9 out of 10.

How has it helped my organization?

We use the solution for business-critical applications as an application and server monitoring agent. The users use the solution to correct their application’s performance and clear hurdles in their applications.

What is most valuable?

The product provides a nice end-user experience. The users are happy to use the product for .NET applications. The users are happy with the real-time use cases.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see more information about utilization. The tool should provide information like the number of connections and processes utilized in real time.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for the last four to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is perfectly stable. I rate the stability a ten out of ten. There is no need to do anything after the installation or configuration.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product scales perfectly. I would rate the product’s stability a ten out of ten. We have four to five very critical applications related to revenue transactions used by more than 50 to 70 employees, including line management, domain leads, SMEs, L1, L2, and L3 employees. We use the solution once a month, depending on the requirement.

How are customer service and support?

I have not found any issues in the last four to five years. It's a very smooth and easy setup. I have never got any errors or issues from the end user.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have multiple solutions related to server monitoring. We have HPE and other tools as well. Compared to other tools, AppDynamics gives correct and good information related to the server. We switched to AppDynamics because we required a correlation between applications. That's why we use the same tool for the application and the server.

How was the initial setup?

The product is very easy to set up. I rate the ease of setup a ten out of ten. The installation and configuration are very easy to learn.

What about the implementation team?

It would take hardly half an hour to deploy the solution. It's a process that revolves around end-user requirements. First, I validate the details of the requirements shared by the end user. Then, I validate and deploy the solution according to their requirements. The deployment is done in-house. One person can handle the deployment.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have also deployed SCOM. We decided to use AppDynamics because we required a real-time output during peak hours. We used Appdynamics to share the information with the users.

What other advice do I have?

We have a very limited use case related to server monitoring. There is no need to refer to further addition. Every piece of information related to server monitoring is very concrete and crystal clear. We do not get any requests in any division from the end user related to the product. I do not have any issues with the configuration.

I would recommend the product because it provides real-time information. Other tools only provide information when there is a server issue. If the CPU reaches 80% while the threshold is set at 70%, they receive an alert. However, Appdynamics offers real-time monitoring and allows users to check their server utilization instantly. Other tools do not provide a consolidated UI to the end users.

Overall, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.
