Gitlab: version control hosting compared to github

  • August 24, 2021
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
In many regards, gitlab is similar to github. I like this because github has become the defacto standard for open source projects. I've used gitlab at multiple jobs and it's always been easy to work on if you have experience with github. Both host repositories with git, so it's mainly just an interface difference. The interface is easy for code browsing and code reviews.
What do you dislike about the product?
Both times I've used gitlab we transitioned off of it as a company. In my experience, when you have over 1,000 developers, the system does not scale well. It becomes slow to browse code, and syncing the repo locks up when many people push upstream. The paid version of gitlab we were using was also losing support.
So we ended up transitioning to github, and that was much better. Gitlab also doesn't have as good of a built-in issue tracking system.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use it to collaborate on software development. Browse code. Perform code reviews. It also connects with other Atlassian products. For example, you can link to documentation in confluence. It works just as well as github for doing code reviews.

I like how it manages the tagging system to identify a different aspect of the project or branch.
What do you dislike about the product?
I think I hate the web editor of GitLab mostly because it's not very user-friendly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are trying to solve our code management with GitLab also the development process.

What do you like best about the product?
I am using GitLab at many organizations and found it best for any early-stage startup that is running on a strict budget.
- Free unlimited private repo
- Free unlimited users
- Sufficient roles/access control under free plan
- Many integrations available for slack/jira/zeplin etc which is great for visiblility in project planning
- Free CI/CD pipelines are cherry on the cake.
What do you dislike about the product?
- Few settings can be made handy.
- Sometimes, the server goes down, and that affects the development/productivity.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- Code and developement is an important part of any tech based industry. And ours is a tech driven ecommerce company. GitLab has provided us with a very strong infrastructure to make a rock-solid foundation for our tech.

Gitlab needs a lot of improvement

  • August 20, 2021
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The only thing I can say I like is the logo, the functionality not so much.
What do you dislike about the product?
I'm not too fond of anything on Gitlab, but the one that gets me the most is the fact that there's no auto-refresh when I push another commit while opening an MR. Also, I hate that they're called Merge Requests.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are using Gitlab as a repository manager. It's better than BitBucket but doesn't come close to Github.

    Yash V.

Better but not as popular as github

  • August 19, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have been using source control tools for a while now and have used almost all tools, including Bitbucket, GitHub, and gitlab. I like that GitLab provides you a package to self-manage the GitLab locally in your organization. It is one of the best things and can be used where the security of the code is very crucial.
What do you dislike about the product?
I still think their community and support are not as good as Github. In other aspects, it completely matches the best in the market.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We had a local GitLab setup in our previous organizations. It reduced our cost, and the security was not hampered at all.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
They can chain up the game and maybe upgrade their support system.

Best Tool for Managing Code Repository

  • August 19, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I love the UI of GitLab. It's straightforward to monitor and view the changes made by the team. Moreover, the feature provided to integrate and deploy the code in various environments is also helpful. We can provide granular access to different members in a team.
What do you dislike about the product?
Suppose we are merging a feature branch to develop. And many members of the Team had contributed their code in the particular feature branch. During the merge and review phase, we can see the changes between the two branches.

It would be great if we can see the name of the person as well when we hover over the changes which are highlighted in the green color. It does help if we are reviewing as a team. We can clarify the changes at that moment instead of going back and looking at who added the changes in which commit.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Version Control of Code, Deployment of code in relevant infrastructure using Pipeline.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
GitLab comes with multiple features, and it's beneficial when we are working in a team. It does help to maintain and access the code and we can also integrate it with our cloud infrastructure to deploy the code in CI-CD environment.
