What do you like best about the product?
One of my personal best aspect of Microsoft SQL SIS to Alation is its robust and versatile ETL (Extract, Transform & Load) capabilities
What do you dislike about the product?
A notable downside of Microsoft SQL is it's limited focus on Data cataloging and governance while It is powerful for ETL processes and a decent Workflow automation it lacks comprehensive discovery and metadata management.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Microsoft SSIS mainly help us handle the ETL (Extraction, Transformation and Loading) of data from various sources allowing for data consolidation into a more centralized database.

Great tool for analysis

  • June 18, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and Alation serve different but complementary roles in data management and analytics ecosystems. SSIS is a data integration tool primarily used for data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL), while Alation is a data catalog that helps with data governance, discovery, and collaboration.
What do you dislike about the product?
Complexity and Learning Curve:

SSIS can be complex to set up and use, especially for those new to ETL tools. The learning curve is steep, requiring a good understanding of SQL Server and the SSIS environment.

Limited Data Cataloging Features:

SSIS lacks built-in data cataloging and governance features. It focuses primarily on ETL processes, which means it doesn't provide comprehensive data discovery, lineage tracking, or metadata management like Alation.

Dependency on Microsoft Ecosystem:

While SSIS integrates well with Microsoft products, it may not be as effective or easy to use with non-Microsoft systems. This dependency can be limiting in diverse tech environments.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Integrating Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) with Alation solves the problem of comprehensive data management by combining robust ETL processes with advanced data cataloging and governance. This benefits users by enabling seamless data extraction, transformation, and loading, while ensuring easy data discovery and compliance. For example, an organization can efficiently manage and understand their data assets, ensuring accurate and compliant data flows for business intelligence.

Great solution after a hard time with configurations

  • June 18, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It was really helpful to visualize and understand the data flows through the ETL processes. Having a centralized vault or repository of data, improved the access and analysis with several teams.
What do you dislike about the product?
The integration required a lot of settings and configurations, some of them really tricky. In order to get the results needed, a couple of third-party tools were considered to get more functionality and then discarded because of the cost and potential compatibility concerns.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The focus was on data governance and understanding of our data pipelines. It was a valuable step forward in our organization although, some concerns are still in the air regarding the functionalities and limitations of the data transformation process.

SSIS integration with Alation excels in providing a clear and comprehensive understanding of data lineage. Alation automatically captures the metadata from SSIS packages, including data sources, transformations, and destinations
What do you dislike about the product?
Setting up and maintaining the integration between SSIS and Alation can be somewhat complex, especially for organizations with large and intricate data environments
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
A unified view of data across integration, cataloging, and governance layers streamlines data management and facilitates data-driven decision-making
