pfSense is safety and productivity

  • October 27, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Using pfSense we took control of what come in and go out to/from our net, controlling the access and monitoring malicious connection trial and attacks.
Firewalling, multiples WAN combined, Captive Portal are great resources, as is OpenVPN too. The Negate user forum is very helpful.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is not exactly about what I dislike, is about a frustration: pfSense requires a high knowledge to setup it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Considering the high increase of home office work, we were able to easily connect our workers and, in a safe manner, share information among us, using OpenVPN. Also, for security, we adopt multiples WAN connections, and pfSense makes possible to share and balance them. Firewall rules, using aliases, turn easy to control what comes and goes from/to the Internet.

pfSense - Reliable, fast, KISS, swiss army knife firewall

What do you like best about the product?
One of the issues I like about pfSense is that Netgate keeps supporting all the hardware regardless of age. We live in a regulated environment where, if the hardware or software goes into End-of-Life, we are forced to upgrade to newer hardware/software. With pfSense, we can rest assured that as long as the solution meets our needs, we can keep using the same platform for years to come.
What do you dislike about the product?
non-Netgate hardware is not updated as frequently as pfSense running on Netgate hardware.
pfSense is NOT available on the Google Cloud Platform, as it is on Azure and AWS.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Many problems.

1. VPN Wireguard and OpenVPN implementation is easy to set up and so reliable.
2. Very flexible DNS options that support every imaginable environment.
3. Geo-blocking
4. Super easy upgrade process
5. Just restore the configuration backup and voila everything is reconfigured as before, including all the software packages.
6. Simple easy-to-use interfaces for Suricata and Snort.
7. Handles high-capacity bandwidth with ease.
8. Hardware requirements are minimal.
9. Zabbix monitoring support.
10. Support for Lets Encrypt
11. Available at AWS and Azure.

What do you dislike about the product?
I would prefer some gui changes to make monitoring easier ex graph generation and have been worried about some decisions of company management

Providing high reliability for gateway between multiple sites.

pfSense makes it quite simple to setup your own firewall device.

What do you like best about the product?
It's simple, fast, and has most of the features I'm looking for.
What do you dislike about the product?
pfBlocker and squidGuard are not as simple to use. It advertises that it can block IPs and URLs and keyword matching for websites on a Vlan or individual IP/Mac addresses basis, but I could not get it working well. It ended up blocking legitimate traffic instead of doing what it needed to.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It's a lot faster than appliances like netgear, asus as routers. I'm able to get almost all of my 1 gigabit of bandwidth via ethernet. I have multiple LANs. It provides DNS/DHCP and static reservations. It provides a nice firewall as well and VPN tunnel as well.

pfSense is THE solution for SMB and Small SaaS Providers

  • October 27, 2022
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
pfSense is a free solution by the packet masters at Netgate. It has more features than any single system is likely to use and has professional Netgate support available. It is regularly updated and (after RTFM :) easy to us, assuming you have some understanding of network layers.
What do you dislike about the product?
Documentation does not always keep up with upgrades.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
pfSense allows us unlimited VPC (Virtual Private Clouds) environments in our data center. This allows us to offer complete infrastructure and disaster recovery to our clients.

Functionality matches exactly my needs.

What do you like best about the product?
Crafted to fit lower level of hardware as base for appliance. Stability of work. Community of helpful users. Ease of configuration and wide scope of useful plugins.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not much. Configuration of very specific modules might be tricky. Personally, I had minor issues with LTE devices on the serial interface while running pfSense as VM on proxmox.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Allows me to manage a few segments of small networks and DMZ/lab environments with a redundant Internet connection and VPN access without a huge investment. With expected stability and transparency.

What do you like best about the product?
lots of options and plugin apps, lots of guides online, runs on cheap-ish hardware
What do you dislike about the product?
my netgate hardware died after a poweroutage. the webui is slow and a bit unreliable. had to go cli for fw upgrade which did not wokr out of the box
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
pfsense lets me seperate network functions from my servers and from my appliances - a DIY network applaince

An excellent all in one firewall, router, and network security device.

What do you like best about the product?
I love that it is an open source all in one solution to help keep your network safe. It handles routing, DHCP, DNS, intrusion detection, VPN, firewall, and so much more. I put my ISP's router and my wifi router in bridge mode and let my NetGate pfsense box handle all my traffic. I like how you can ssh into it or use the web GUI. The wizards on the GUI are easy to follow to set up how you want your network to be. The hardware is small and doesn't take up a lot of room. The VPN wizards are awesome. It even has a package that will export a profile you can install on your iPhone or Android that will connect you to your VPN.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some configurations are a little hard to understand, but that's if you're going for the genuinely complicated setups. Other than that, I have no other complaints.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It has reduced the hardware and different setups I must do to secure my network. It is very inexpensive to buy and operate. Configurations are easy to save in case of disaster recovery.
