Database Performance Analyzer
What do you like best about the product?
Like many educational institutions, our budget does not allow for the purchase of Oracle's Diagnostics and Tuning packages. SolarWinds' DPA gives customers the insight into their environment that Oracle *should* provide, but doesn't.
What do you dislike about the product?
I haven't really found anything I much dislike yet!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In the past, we didn't really have the ability to be proactive and solve problems before they became huge. With DPA, we can keep an eye on performance and typically know when something is wrong and can fix it before our users even notice anything!
DPA is everything your DBA desires
What do you like best about the product?
Even though SQL server has the information available to your DBA, it doesn't compile and present it the same way that DPA does. Not only that, but you can title specific sql actions to maintain a visual on the actions that are common and causing the highest wait times.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike that the trial was only 14 days... `
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have already realized over 10 different issues that we were able to quickly resolve across multiple departments simply by letting it do it's thing. My DBA was giddy with excitement and we totally ended up purchasing it because of the impact it had on our business.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The setup is pretty simple... just make sure you have the right credentials for each instance!

ease of use, easy integration, simple maneuvering through windows.

some of the menus are not as intuitive as necessary, unintegrating the trial product was problematic

I like the fact at any time, when someone approaches me about an issue I can bring up solid evidence of an issue.

The only thing I dislike is somehow it's hard to find what I need quickly.

We are solving slowness issues in databases by identifying bottlenecks and other issues.

The in depth detail it provides, and the quick ability to find problems.

The required separate server, should be apart of primary solarwinds server.

Application performance issues, top slow queries. The overrall ability to monitor, ddiagnoise and resolve problems within databases, helps teach uninformed database administrators and provides great insight for experienced database admins.

Try an evaluation, and witness the impact in time it can save to troubleshoot problems for a variety of things.
Great Product to see under the hood of your applications
What do you like best about the product?
Being able to get alerts on DB slowness.

Nothing that I've found so far! Be good if it was cheaper.

SolarWinds DPA - View From Limited Use
What do you like best about the product?
Very in depth product and makes it a lot easier to find problems and root cause. Love the Tuning advisor, comes in very handy when you're not a DBA admin, and enjoy the query analysis.
Not being from a DBA background there is a learning curve to this, but if you take the input from DPA it will point you in the right direction more quickly to resolve the issue or even prevent the problem all together.

What do you dislike about the product?
Cost due to the licensing model, depending on your setup.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're still getting our heads around the product, but there was instantly some questions came up around tuning the databases that we hadn't realized before.
Great for those who aren't DBAs
What do you like best about the product?
Great data output, easy to understand charts that can be emailed. Our DBAs have really liked moving to the new product and we'd like to roll it out further. We host our own web applications. Being able to chart Database performance along application statistics is perfect.
What do you dislike about the product?
Separate server required to our standard Orion install. It would be nice to see the next steps of integration between DPA and the Orion Suite. We need to keep the number of VMs to a minimum.

Linking application performance to database performance when troubleshooting.

Get a trial and give it a try.

Allows monitoring in real time of DB performance, and flags potential problems.

Interface is a little klugy, but otherwise works well.

Take a look. It's well worth the price and has helped us solve problems quickly.
DPA is a pretty great tool
What do you like best about the product?
The best thing I've used it for was looking for root blockers and monitoring deadlocks but just from the features that I looked at while in the trial period it can do so much more. It was easy to use and the setup didn't take much time. I know that a lot of time can be put in on it but that is something else I liked about DPA. If you are willing to spend the time and develop it, it could be a one stop shop
What do you dislike about the product?
There wasn't much that I didn't like, there were times went the program seemed slow however that could have been due to the limitations on the database I was trying it on
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We were having issues with deadlocks happening during the middle of the day and DPA helped to quickly identify where they were coming from and who was causing it. (It was someone running 52 different reports in Orion for hardware monitors at the same time.) The benefits to me seem to be endless plus if given the opportunity within my current company I would like to see about getting it implemented

It's a great tool for analyzing your database with. I would highly recommend it.
