Really good for real time debugging and monitoring
What do you like best about the product?
Drilling down into specifics of an issue if they are being fed to the splunk server

All the information needed to be shown here needs to be fed to the splunk server, I would prefer if with an annotation it figured out what all to feed to it and what not to

Also check out kibana, using that now and its seems easier to use than splunk.

Versatile, lots of queries can be done even at a complex level.

Ability to track trends, create alerts and notifications, share data, ingest data, and get the whole team up to speed.

Monitoring, support, dashboard, notifications, reporting.
The cost is really high, but we figured if we used its fully capability, we would require 1 fewer helpdesk person. It took awhile to get the various reports and dashboards set up, but we now have complete visibility into our business, with full history and analytics that anyone in the company can dive into.

What do you like best about the product?
The total amount of information that can be processed and parsed up into useful data.
What do you dislike about the product?
It seems that every new product requires me to learn a new syntax or language in order to make full use of a product. This is no different, but it is still useful.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have many unique data collection methods in our environment. Being able to redirect them into an analysis engine that can then correlate that data into meaningful, actionable dashboards helps a great deal.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Great tool, but I understand that there can be significant cost issues depending on the amount of data being collected/stored.

Splunk is easy to use and allows the mining of disparate log files to consolidate reporting and monitoring.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing, the product worked very well. Admins were able to set it up and push out the report functionaly.

Mining log files of connection information for web services that allow us to provide usage information to the organization and to the clients themselves.

can be super expensive and the administration of it.

being able to highlight problem areas in large logs and address them quickly

What do you like best about the product?
Quick although it goes thru a ton of data. Once logs are pulled the info is easy to read and the query run is easily adjusted using the settings on the side.

Hard to learn! So hard! I understand that businesses are different but man, I could have used a tutorial on even the basics!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use it to pull logs and data at a software company. Makes it easy to pull and share logs with other teams and even adjust the timeframe. Great tool when trying to determine potential issues in the software.

Ease of importing data, naming of indexes, sources, per log source

Indexing and searching of log data
Works as advertised, but not easy or simple.
What do you like best about the product?
I like the ability to create charts & alerts. Searching logs works nicely and you can find what you are looking for, assuming that you wrote your logs in a key-value manner which splunk can index efficiently.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike the query language. I never found it intuitive. I felt it is reinventing the wheel, in a bad way. Also it is far from realtime when there is a lot of data. We have got to as much as 30 minutes delay in seeing the service is having a major problem.

CloudOn provided on-demand remote Microsoft Office to tablets and mobile phones, using a patented proprietary video compression protocol. The service was running on the cloud and logs were collected from all nodes and forwarded to Splunk.

Recommendations to others considering the product:
You will need to rewrite your logs in a way that Splunk likes to index, otherwise you will not be able to search it easily. We have seen it crashed a number of times under high load. You will need to have someone responsible for starting it back up and managing expiring licenses, disk-out-of-space problems etc.
Can be useful, but difficult UI
What do you like best about the product?
It is useful to have a tool available that is for searching through logs. This makes finding errors in different environments including production or qa environments more streamlined and easier to track.
What do you dislike about the product?
The UI of splunk is not great. The indication that a search is searching is not super obvious. It took me a while to notice the very thin blur status bar. And learning to search with splunk takes reading the tutorials and playing around because it is not very intuitive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Splunk makes searching through logs easier. This makes finding bugs or large errors faster, and also makes tracking what happened in your application (when things were created and or modified) easier.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I think it is a good buy for enterprise customers. If you work at a big company and need something tested that your legal team won't freak out over this could be a good option. I think for smaller startups you should shop around more before signing up.
