Overview
Apache Tomcat is an open-source web server and servlet container that is developed by the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). It implements the Java Servlet and the JavaServer Pages (JSP) specifications from Oracle and offers a pure Java HTTP web server environment for Java code to run in.
Tomcat was first released in the year 1998 and it started as a reference implementation for the first Java Servlet API and the JSP spec. Currently, it is no longer the reference implementation for either of these technologies, Tomcat remains the most widely used Java server, boasting a well-tested and proven core engine with good extensibility.
