Overview
K8ssandra is a cloud-native framework for Apache Cassandra®. The embedded operator handles Cassandra configuration, scaling, and operational tasks. Additional Cloud Native components which are preconfigured include:
- Stargate Developer APIs for Cassandra: REST, GraphQL, and Document APIs
- Metrics Collector using Grafana and Prometheus to collect and display metrics
- Reaper from to automate repairs (Credit to Spotify)
- Medusa for backups (Credit to Spotify)
Cassandra may be deployed in a number of environments. This includes on bare metal hosts, virtual machines, and within container platforms. Each deployment type has its pros and cons, but in all cases it is essential that automation be leveraged to ensure that all node are configured homogeneously and without failure.
K8ssandra focuses on deploying Cassandra within Kubernetes. Kubernetes was chosen as it allows for the consumption of a common, versioned, set of APIs and tooling across multiple cloud platforms and environments.
Highlights
- REST, GraphQL, and JSON/Document APIs
- Easy to scale clusters
- Integrated observability and health management Cass Operator to support Cassandra management tasks in Kubernetes.

Container image
Containers are lightweight, portable execution environments that wrap server application software in a filesystem that includes everything it needs to run. Container applications run on supported container runtimes and orchestration services, such as Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) or Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS). Both eliminate the need for you to install and operate your own container orchestration software by managing and scheduling containers on a scalable cluster of virtual machines.
