Generative AI – Securing Your Code With Amazon Q Developer

    About the Workshop:
Code Security is one of the foundational steps of building secure software. Join us for a session to get hands-on with how Amazon Q Developer provides your developers security feedback within the IDE itself.

Amazon Q can chat about code, provide inline code completions, generate net new code, scan your code for security vulnerabilities, and make code upgrades and improvements, such as language updates, debugging, and optimizations. Security scans in Q Developer identify security vulnerabilities and suggest how to improve your code. In some cases, Q Developer provides code you can use to address those vulnerabilities.

In this workshop we will show you actual samples of insecure code and how Amazon Q Developers detects them along with providing examples for remediation.

An AWS account is not required for this workshop as we are using the Free Tier version of Amazon Q Developer. You will need to setup a Builder ID to allow Amazon Q Developer to integrate to VS Code IDE.

This Immersion Day qualifies for the Amazon Q Developer Workshop Builder’s Quest participation badge.

    Who Should Attend:
This workshop is designed for technical audience (e.g. developers, development managers, architects, and consultants) who want to learn how the latest Generative AI services such as Amazon Q Developer can improve the security of their software lifecycle. A basic knowledge of Python coding is required to understand the code samples and the security implications present in them. For the best experience we recommend the use of two monitors.

Govern and secure your multi-account environment with AWS Control Tower

    About the Workshop:
You'll dive deep into AWS Control Tower's capabilities, exploring how to establish a well-architected landing zone, implement governance controls, and streamline account creation and management. Through instructor-led demonstrations and practical labs, you'll gain valuable skills in creating organizational units, enabling controls, managing network configurations, and addressing compliance issues.

AWS Control Tower offers a simple and efficient way to set up and govern a secure, multi-account AWS environment. It establishes a landing zone that is based on best-practices blueprints, and it enables governance using controls you can choose from a prepackaged list. The landing zone is a well-architected, multi-account baseline that follows AWS best practices.

This event does require your own AWS account and we require customers to conduct these Workshop Prerequisites prior to the event. Also, all of the work conducted alongside our instructors should be done in a test (sandbox) environment. We do not recommend handling any production workloads during this workshop.

This Immersion Day qualifies for the AWS Control Tower Immersion Day Builder’s Quest participation badge.

    Who Should Attend:
Current AWS Customers - Please make sure to complete the Workshop Prerequisites prior to the event and bring your own AWS account to the event.
Aspiring AWS Customers - If you do not currently have an AWS account follow these simple steps. If you do not want to create an AWS account you are more than welcome to attend our event and listen to the instructors.

    1. Instructions to creating a new AWS account using your company email address.
    2. Instructions to launching an EC2 instance to test the newly created AWS account.

    Topics Covered:
In these two section customers will learn the value proposition of AWS Control Tower and then receive training through instructor led demo’s on how to use AWS Control Tower once a landing zone is created. Key topics include:

    • Introduction to AWS Control Tower
    • Hands-on practice with day-to-day tasks
    • Controls management for security, operational, and compliance requirements
    • Enrolling existing organization units and accounts into AWS Control Tower

Section 1 – Learn about AWS Control Tower

    • Welcome
    • Workshop Setup
    • AWS Control Tower Presentation

Section 2 – Practice with AWS Control Tower

    • Lab: Introduction to AWS Control Tower
      • In this lab, we will walk through some of the day-to-day Control Tower administrative tasks and see how they are done using Control Tower created resources. We will cover: Create an Organizational Unit (OU) and enable a control using the AWS Control Tower dashboard. Modify the Network configuration of Account Factory. Launch a new AWS Account using Account Factory as an AWS Control Tower Admin user. Log into the new AWS Account. Create an S3 bucket with versioning disabled. Investigate the Noncompliant resources violation captured by AWS Control Tower and take corrective action.
    • Lab: Controls Management
      • Controls help you set-up governance on your multi-account environment to align with AWS best practices and common compliance frameworks. Some customers, especially those operating in a regulated industry, go through a time-consuming and expensive process of identifying risk and building their own controls that account for service relationships and their dependencies. The result is an increase in time-to-value (TTV) for new services. AWS Control Tower provides you with 400+ controls out-of-the-box to support the distinct security requirements of your workloads. In this lab, you will learn how to use AWS Control Tower Controls to help meet your organization's security, operational, and compliance requirements.
    • Lab: Enrolling Existing Organizations and Accounts into AWS Control Tower
      • In this lab, you will learn how to enroll your existing organization unit and accounts into the newly created AWS Control Tower environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Immersion Day?
An Immersion Day allows hands-on time with AWS services under the guidance of Solution Architects for a particular topic. They are designed by topic, and typically have 2-4 presentations along with 2-4 hands-on labs that follow a continuous thread to help learners become familiar with the service. These events are a common starting point for customers looking to prepare to use a service or solution in a meaningful project.

What is a Solutions-Focused Immersion Day?
A Solutions-Focused Immersion Day, also known as an SFID, is a 1:many virtual customer event that leverages the Immersion Day format but brings together builders from different backgrounds and different areas to one event to learn together.

Do I need experience using AWS services to attend the event?
Not at all. You might want to plan on attending the monthly "Introduction to AWS" session we offer if this will be your first time using AWS services. Each session is given a level as to the complexity of that session. It is recommended that you choose a session that aligns to your AWS experience.

  • Level 100 - Introductory: Sessions will focus on providing an overview of AWS services and features, with the assumption that attendees are new to the topic.
  • Level 200 - Intermediate: Sessions will focus on providing best practices, details of service features, and offering demos, assuming that attendees have introductory knowledge of the topics.
  • Level 300 - Advanced: Sessions will dive deeper into the selected topic. Presenters assume that the audience has some familiarity with the topic, but may or may not have direct experience implementing a similar solution.
  • Level 400 - Expert: Sessions are for attendees who are deeply familiar with the topic, have implemented a solution on their own already, and are comfortable with how the technology works across multiple services, architectures, and implementations.

Will there be any hands-on during the event?
The majority of the Immersion Day sessions have hands-on labs, as the main purpose of the Immersion Days is to the get builders hands-on with the AWS services. There are a few exceptions, so please read the description of the Immersion Day session to verify if hands-on labs are included.

Will using the services during the event cost me money?
During the Immersion Day sessions, you will be given a temporary AWS account for the day to perform the labs in a temporary environment. These temporary accounts are available for 24 hours from the start of the session and will automatically terminate. The exception to this is the Control Tower Immersion Day. Control Tower itself has no cost associated with it, but the different services you utilize will determine the cost.

Do I need an AWS account to attend?
During the Immersion Day sessions, you will be given a temporary AWS account for the day to perform the labs in a temporary environment. These temporary accounts are available for 24 hours from the start of the session and will automatically terminate. The exception to this is the Control Tower Immersion Day. For the Control Tower Immersion Day, you need to bring your own account to participate. To set up your AWS account, please visit this webpage

How many events can I attend?
There are no restrictions on the number of events you can attend.

What should I do if I do not receive a confirmation email after registering?
Please reach out to csc-immersion-day@amazon.com and make sure you include the event title and date in your email.

What happens if I show up late?
We understand things happen and sometimes you may need to join late. Please plan to join the event at the beginning so we can set you up with the temporary AWS account. If you join the event after the temporary AWS accounts have been handed out and labs have started, you will not receive a temporary account. You would need to either use your own AWS account (which may incur costs) or you can watch the labs as a demo and work on them in your own AWS account at a later date.

Do I need to download anything before the event?
For most events, nothing is required. If your event requires any special downloads, it will be referenced in the email confirmation you receive.

What virtual event platform are the Immersion Days delivered on?
Solutions-Focused Immersion Days utilize either Amazon Chime or GoTo Webinar. To ensure compatibility and a smooth experience, participants should refer to the platform-specific requirements: The GoTo Webinar system requirements page for GoTo Webinar events, and the Amazon Chime system requirements compatibility page for Amazon Chime events. It's important to check the requirements for the platform specified in your event invitation.

What browser should I use?
For web versions of the training platform, we recommend the Chrome browser. Please refer to the system requirements for additional information.

Do I have to stay for the entire event?
There is no time requirement, however, we don’t record the sessions so you could miss important information if you leave early. If you leave early, you are not eligible for the AWS Builder’s Quest Badge. Many of the events happen on a reoccurring basis, so you can possibly attend another session if you have to leave early.

Will I be given a recording of the event?
These events are not recorded.

Should I use my company email to register?
We require that you use your company email to register. By registering with your company email, we can quickly and easily get you connected with your account team.

Will I be given a copy of the slides presented during the event?
We will share a copy of the presentation slides after the Immersion Day session.

Are the sessions offered in any other language?
At this time, sessions are offered in English. We are working to offer sessions in other languages.

I am not located in North America. Are there sessions available in other time zones?
This program is based in North America. We do have a sister program based in Europe. Please visit AWS CloudBoost to see what sessions are available.

What is AWS Builder’s Quest?
AWS Builder's Quest is a digital badge program that provides recognition for participation and completion of AWS technology learning events including AWS Immersion Days. AWS Builder's Quest is an innovative and fun way for builders to receive recognition for an AWS technology learning event by obtaining digital badges. Not all events offer an AWS Builder's Quest Badge. Please refer to the individual event to see what badge is available.

Why is it called AWS Builder’s Quest?
Customers embark on the quest and achieve the next level by accumulation of AWS Learning Participant badges. As you earn the participant badges, you will automatically earn Level Badges. AWS Builder's Quest Learning Participant badges provides recognition for participation and completion of AWS technology learning events. AWS Builder's Quest Level badges provide recognition for joining multiple Immersion Day sessions.

Why be part of AWS Builder’s Quest?
AWS Builder’s Quest asserts that a builder successfully completed an AWS technology learning event. As a part of AWS Builder's Quest, builders can visually represent their achievements using digital badges which can be used to showcase a rich picture of a learning journey on professional networks such as LinkedIn.

Who can use AWS Builder’s Quest?
Anyone who participates in a Solutions-Focused Immersion Day event hosted by an AWS Solutions Architect.

What is the difference between AWS Builder’s Quest and AWS Certification?
An AWS Builder’s Quest Learning Participant badge asserts that a learner has successfully participated in technology learning event such as an AWS Immersion Days. There is no written or formal testing required post event to attest to proficiency of the specific service. AWS Certification provides documentation of competency and proficiency of a specific area. AWS Certification requires passing a formal test to be certified.

Can I earn more than one of the same AWS Builder’s Quest Badge?
Each AWS Builder’s Quest badge is aligned to a specific topic. You can only earn 1 badge per topic, even if you attend multiple events for that same topic. Each event lists what badge you will earn for attending. If you already have that badge, you will not be issued another badge.

How do I get the AWS Builder’s Quest Badge?
At the end of each SFID Session, you are asked to complete a customer satisfaction survey. Once you complete that survey, you will be redirected to opt-in to receive the badge for the Immersion Day session. We do need you to opt-in to receive the badge so we can share your name and email address with Credly for the purpose of issuing you the digital badge.

Can I earn the badge if I leave early?
To earn the badge, it is expected that you participate in the entire Immersion Day. If you leave the event early and you do not complete the survey to opt-in to receive the badge, you will not be able to earn the badge.

How can I contact the AWS Builder’s Quest team if I have questions that aren't listed here?
You can contact our team via email aws-builders-quest@amazon.com

Are Control Tower Immersion Days different?
Yes, Control Tower Immersion Days are different in that you need to have your own AWS account. We will not provide temporary AWS accounts for these events. We ask that customers conduct these Workshop Prerequisites prior to the event. Also, all of the work conducted alongside our instructors should be done in a test (sandbox) environment. We do not recommend handling any production environment workloads during this workshop. Please refer to the session description for additional information.
