AWS Marketplace Free Trials for Popular Products

The AWS Marketplace makes it easy and simple for you to find, buy, and start using a wide variety of software and services.

I am happy to announce that more than 100 of the products in the AWS Marketplace are now available as time-limited, free trials including popular products from Riverbed, Barracuda, Compuware, SafeNet, and RealNetworks. You can see the full list on our new Free Software Trials page.

If you decide to keep the instance running, you wont need to do a thing.  Youll automatically be converted to a paid hourly subscription (well send you an email beforehand).  You can cancel your evaluation at any time.

You can find these products by looking for the new Free Trial banner beneath the product image (highlighted in yellow, below):

If you are eligible for the AWS Free Usage Tier and the application you’d like to test will run on a micro instance, you can try it out at no charge for software or for AWS resources as long as your resource consumption stays within what’s available to you at this level. Marketplace products available in this mode (Free Trial + Free Tier) include Sophos UTM, NGINX, Syncsort Ironcluster, Zend PHP Server, and aiScaler.

If you are a software vendor, you can offer customers access to a full-featured version of your software for evaluation purposes right from the start. You can do this for any and all of the EC2 instance types. You don’t have to create a separate trial offering and you don’t have to worry about migration when customers want to purchase a full version. Once your product is on the AWS Marketplace, you can offer a Free Trial on the Marketplace with zero engineering effort! Read our Sell on Marketplace page to learn how to get started.

Launch AWS Marketplace Software into VPCs With 1-Click

The AWS Marketplace helps you to find, buy, and immediately start using a wide variety of software and services. You can launch pre-configured software and pay only for what you use, by the hour or by the month.

Today we are simplifying the process of launching networking and security software products from the Marketplace inside of a Virtual Private Cloud. There are two important aspects to this feature:

First, you can now launch all AMI-based AWS Marketplace products into Amazon VPC. To try this, choose an AMI-based product (e.g. CentOS, WordPress or Adobe ColdFusion) and select an existing VPC and subnet as part of your 1-Click launch from the AWS Marketplace website:

Second, as part of the release, five of our launch partners are making their networking and security offerings available for launch within a VPC using AWS CloudFormation.  You will be able to configure existing VPCs, select multiple subnets and associate Elastic IPs directly from the AWS Marketplace website during the 1-Click launch process. In this past, this process required some manual intervention.

VPC Launch Tour
Let’s walk through a launch to see this new feature in action. Suppose I want to launch the Citrix NetScaler VPX Standard Edition. This product makes use of three VPC subnets. I verify the pricing and features, and click the Continue button:

Prior to this release, I would have had to use the EC2 Console to finalize the launch into one of my Virtual Private Clouds. That option is still available; however, the new 1-Click Launch is easier and faster. The new VPC Settings section is displayed; as you can see I still need to click the Set up button to choose some options:

I have the opportunity to target one of my VPCs and specific subnets (management, private, and public) within it for the launch:

Once I make my selection, I can proceed with the launch.

Networking and Security
As I mentioned earlier, five of our partners already have their VPC-based offerings available in the AWS Marketplace:

I expect this list to grow quickly in the coming weeks and months.

CloudFormation Inside
A CloudFormation template is attached to the VPC-enabled products listed above. The template launches the EC2 instance and creates any necessary Elastic Network Interfaces. You can click on the CloudFormation Template link to take a peek inside:

The template will be displayed in a pop-up window:

We plan to allow other Marketplace products to make use of CloudFormation templates as part of their setup process.

AWS Marketplace – New Management Portal for ISVs & VARs

The AWS Marketplace provides an easy way for sellers (ISVs / Independent Software Vendors and VARs / Value Added Resellers) to market and sell their software to developers and IT professionals.

Today we are introducing a new AWS Marketplace Management Portal. This portal provides our partners with access to demand generation and business metrics reports, real-time data on customer subscriptions, and secure file uploading.

Let’s take a tour of the new portal! Here’s the main page:

If you use search engine marketing or link-building to generate demand for your marketplace products, you’ll love the next feature. The Marketing Dashboard provides you with click and conversion information to help you to track and optimize your campaigns. You need only include the appropriate reference tag (see our handy guide) to initiate the tracking process.

You have access to current and historical marketing reports:

The next feature gives you the ability to verify that a particular AWS customer has purchased a subscription to one of your products. Simply enter their AWS Customer ID:

The Management Portal gives you access to weekly marketing, metrics, and disbursement reports in CSV format:

Last but not least, you can upload your product metadata, images, and other documentation to the Marketplace:

This new feature is available to all AWS Marketplace sellers today. Take the AWS Marketplace Management Portal Tour to learn more.

AWS Management Console – AWS Marketplace Integration

Have you used the AWS Marketplace? You can find, buy, and start using over 800 popular AMIs (Amazon Machine Images) in 24 categories using the Marketplace, with more products added every week.

Today we are making the AWS Marketplace even easier to use by making it accessible from within the EC2 tab of the AWS Management Console. As part of this work, we have also improved the console’s Launch Instance Wizard. Read on to learn more about both of these advances.

Marketplace Integration
You can now choose to search or browse the Marketplace when you click the console’s Launch Instance button by selecting the AWS Marketplace tab. You can browse through all 24 categories without having to leave the console:

You can browse through individual categories (I selected “Business Software”):

You can also enter a search term (in this case I searched for “Analytics”):

Once you find the desired package, the console will show you the pricing, system requirements, ratings, and other important information:

The console will use information supplied by the software vendor to recommend an instance type and create a new Security Group.

You can then proceed to adjust (if necessary) the instance type, finalize the other details, and launch the product, all within the AWS Management Console.

Launch Instance Wizard Improvements
We have improved the Console’s Launch Instance Wizard to make it even easier for you to launch EC2 instances. Searching for public and private AMIs is now instantaneous and the process of choosing instance types and security groups has been simplified. You can now copy rules from an existing security group to a new one, and there’s an auto-complete feature to streamline the process of tagging instances. Finding snapshots and creating volumes from them as part of the launch process is now faster and easier.

The console now groups related EC2 instance types together to allow you to choose the most suitable one more efficiently:

When you start to type a tag name, a popup will offer to complete it for you:

You can select an existing security group and review the rules within it. You can also copy an existing group to a new one with just one click:

You can now search for EBS volume snapshots (including Public Data Sets) when you add storage as part of an instance launch:

As part of this work we have been modernizing and fine-tuning the overall look and feel of the EC2 console. The remaining pages will be updated in the near future. If you have any suggestions, problems, or complaints, please feel free to leave a comment on this post or in the EC2 forum.

Demo: SAP HANA One on AWS

My counterpart in Germany, AWS Evangelist Steffen Krause, has put together the blog post below to show you how to launch and exercise SAP HANA One on AWS. Steffen is also responsible for the German language AWSAktuell blog.

— Jeff;

An interesting software product that created a lot of buzz lately is SAP HANA. It is a database based on in-memory technology. The data to be analyzed are put into memory in compressed form, which allows for very fast analytics.

But SAP HANA is sold by SAP as an appliance, a combination of hard- and software. So to use it, there is a big initial investment. SAP HANA One on the other hand is a version of SAP HANA on Amazon Web Services, so everybody can test and use this technology and develop software for it.

SAP HANA One is available on AWS Marketplace with hourly billing. The software currently costs 0.99 cents per hour, plus the cost of a cc2.8xlarge AWS instance and the required EBS storage. Until May 30th, there is a promotion where you can get 120$ in credits if you use at least 10 hours of SAP HANA One. This video shows the deployment of SAP HANA One on AWS:

After deployment, your HANA instance needs to be configured. To do this, you access the instance using https://ip-address using the Elastic IP address (EIP) that you assigned during deployment. First, you need to enter AWS credentials (Access Key and Secret Access Key) of an AWS account. This information is used by HANA to configure itself on AWS and for operations like backup. I recommend against using your AWS root account credentials. Instead, you should create an IAM user and assign this user to a group with Power Users permissions. Then enter the credentials of this newly created IAM account in the HANA console. You can easily delete this IAM account after testing SAP HANA One. The following video shows the configuration of SAP HANA One on AWS:

After configuring the HANA instance, you can use the product. Either you use SAP HANA Studio for software development (a sample of an android app is here) or you use the graphical analytics tool SAP Visual Intelligence. You can find a trial of this tool in the download tab of the console. In SAP Visual Intelligence, you connect to your HANA instance using the assigned Elastic IP, the instance id 00, the username system and the password that you assigned to system. Then you select one of the sample datasets to analyze it interactively. The following demo shows how this works:

After testing SAP HANA One you should clean up so you stop paying for unused resources. You should:

  • Terminate the instance
  • Release the EIP
  • Delete the EBS volumes that the HANA instance used
  • You can also delete the IAM user

Finally some resources on SAP HANA one and SAP on AWS in general:

There is also now SAP HANA ONE Premium Edition, whic is SAP HANA One with SAP Enterprise Support.

Regards,
Steffen
