Organizations Realize Transformative Benefits with MongoDB on AWS
Guest post by Leo Zheng, Director of Product Marketing, MongoDB
Driven by the demands of modern applications, non-relational “NoSQL” databases have established themselves as a mainstream technology in less than a decade. The Forrester Wave™: Big Data NoSQL, Q3 2016 reports that over 60% of respondents were using, or planning to use, non-relational databases within the next 12 months. It also identifies a number of reasons why developers and architects are choosing NoSQL over traditional RDBMS, including elastic scalability, extreme read and write performance, flexible data models, lower costs, and more.
With over 20 million downloads and over 2,000 customers — including over 50 of the Fortune 100 — MongoDB is the most popular and widely used non-relational database. MongoDB uniquely combines the foundations of relational databases, such as strong consistency, a fully expressive query language, and enterprise software integrations, with NoSQL drivers like data model flexibility, elastic scalability, and “always-on,” making it well-suited for a wide spectrum of use cases within digital transformation and digital disruption initiatives.
Today, an overwhelmingly popular way to deploy MongoDB is by using Amazon Web Services (AWS). Both editions of MongoDB, including MongoDB Community Server, the open source version, and MongoDB Enterprise Server, the commercial edition of the database, can be deployed in the cloud. Clusters can also be easily managed using MongoDB Cloud Manager, a hosted database management platform that allows users to configure and provision databases and the underlying AWS instances directly.
What Does Success Look Like?
By deploying MongoDB on AWS, organizations such as digital entertainment leader Square Enix are realizing transformative benefits. The company built their multi-tenant Online Suite, a central, shared infrastructure as a service, on MongoDB and AWS. The service, which is used across Square Enix’s many game studios, stores metrics, player profiles, leaderboards, competitions, and more. MongoDB’s data flexibility dramatically simplified the development of game-specific functionality. By switching to MongoDB in the cloud, Square Enix experienced drastic improvements in performance and availability:
● A query that took three weeks on their incumbent relational database can now be run in just 2 minutes.
● Zero downtime in five years.
Finally, each new game generates about 120 GB of data per day with some titles like the newest Tomb Raider generating over half a terabyte of data per day. MongoDB on AWS allows Square Enix to continuously scale to meet exploding demand.
MongoDB Atlas: Get Started in Minutes
MongoDB Atlas is a new hosted database as a service for MongoDB that makes it easier than ever to set up, operate, and scale your MongoDB deployments in the cloud. The offering recently debuted on AWS and is offered on demand. With MongoDB Atlas, users get the benefits of a flexible, highly available, and elastically scalable database without having to worry about the operational overhead of managing their clusters. MongoDB best practices are built in and automated, data is secure by default, and otherwise complex operations are reduced to just a few clicks in the MongoDB Atlas UI.
We will be participating in Architecture Week at the AWS Pop-up Lofts in New York and San Francisco and look forward to speaking with you there about NoSQL databases, emerging application architectures, and MongoDB Atlas.
