Munich University of Applied Sciences launches Digital Transformation Lab, powered by AWS

Munich University of Applied Sciences (MUAS) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) opened the Digital Transformation Lab (DTLab) at a July 18, 2019 launch event. The MUAS DTLab was created to accelerate public sector innovation in Germany, helping government, education, and nonprofits tackle some of the most pressing challenges in delivering a wide range of citizen services.

The DTLab operates in close cooperation with the Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship (SCE) and the M:UniverCity innovation network to foster public sector collaboration and to leverage the strong entrepreneurial foundation built through MUAS. A dedicated team of MUAS and AWS staff will work together to leverage the Amazon ‘working backwards’ innovation process to define and explore cloud-based IT solutions.

Over 130 students, faculty, and business and government leaders participated in the event and reception at MUAS. MUAS President Leitner expressed his confidence that this new lab “will allow public organizations to experiment with industry leading rapid innovation processes as the digital transformation of society inexorably moves forward.”

Then AWS DACH leader, Till Dalkowski, and Peter Streifler, Service Owner Cloud and Digital Services at Siemens, delivered a keynote on the impact of cloud. Professor Dr. Rainer Schmidt outlined six projects completed by MUAS students around the theme of civic participation through social information systems, which were later explained in detail at the reception. Computer Science Professor Dr. Gudrun Socher gave a live demonstration of a voice-enabled application (Amazon Alexa) to support the tourism industry. DTLab Program Manager, Florian Allwein, and AWS Digital Innovation Lead, Lars Schmitz, provided details on how the lab and innovation process is designed to work.

Lastly, they hosted a roundtable discussion about digital transformation in Germany, moderated by MUAS Head of Strategic Advancement Office, Sven Winterhalder, included Computer Science Dean Professor Dr. Veronika Thurner, Vice President Prof. Dr. Thomas Stumpp, CIO of City of Munich Thomas Bönig, SCE Head of Corporate Development Michael Hack, and AWS’s Till Dalikowski.

Through collaboration with the AWS Cloud Innovation Center program, students have access to AWS technologies, innovation methodologies, and technical expertise to experiment with ‘born in the cloud’ solutions.

The Digital Transformation Lab in Munich is a member of a global network of ‘powered by AWS’ cloud innovation centers in France (Sciences Po), USA (Cal Poly and Arizona State University), Australia (Swinburne University), Canada (University of British Colombia), Berlin (CODE University) and South Korea (City of Busan). All of these centers have agreed to share their expertise and the output of innovation challenges to address the public sector digital revolution globally.

Hochschule München eröffnet Digital Transformation Lab, „Powered by AWS“

Die Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften München (MUAS) und Amazon Web Services (AWS) eröffneten am 18. Juli 2019 mit einer Auftaktveranstaltung das Digital Transformation Lab (DTLab). Das DTLab wurde gegründet, um die Innovationskraft des öffentlichen Sektors in Deutschland im Bereich Digitalisierung zu fördern. Verwaltung, Bildungseinrichtungen und gemeinnützige Organisationen sollen durch die Bereitstellung von innovativen Diensten bei der Bewältigung drängender technischer und sozialer Herausforderungen dieser Entwicklung unterstützt werden.

Das DTLab wird eng mit dem Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship (SCE) zusammenarbeiten, um dessen starke methodische Kompetenzen im Bereich des Unternehmerischen zu nutzen. Das DTLab wird außerdem eng mit dem Innovationsnetzwerk M:UniverCity kollaborieren, um die Zusammenarbeit mit dem öffentlichen Sektor zu fördern.

Über 130 Studenten, Dozenten sowie Führungskräfte aus Wirtschaft und Verwaltung nahmen an der Veranstaltung an der MUAS teil. Präsident Leitner stellte gleich in seiner Begrüßungsrede fest: „Der digitale Wandel der Gesellschaft schreitet unaufhaltsam voran. Das neue Labor wird es öffentlichen Organisationen ermöglichen, mit etablierten Innovationsprozessen zu experimentieren und so Schritt zu halten.”

Till Dalkowski, Leiter Öffentlicher Sektor für DACH, schloß mit einer Keynote zur Bedeutung der Cloud für den Öffentlichen Sektor an. Er wurde hierbei von Peter Streifler, Service Owner Cloud and Digital Services bei Siemens, begleitet, der interessante Einblicke in Siemens‘ Nutzung von Clouds gab. Florian Allwein (DTLab-Programmmanager) und Lars Schmitz (AWS Digital Innovation Lead) erläuterten, wie das Labor und der Innovationsprozess gestaltet werden. Es folgte die Vorstellung von zwei Pilotprojekten: Professorin Dr. Gudrun Socher demonstrierte live eine sprachgesteuerte Anwendung (Amazon Alexa) zur Unterstützung der Tourismusbranche. Professor Dr. Rainer Schmidt stellte anschließend ein Studentenprojekt zum Thema Bürgerbeteiligung durch soziale Informationssysteme vor. Die Ergebnisse wurden später beim Empfang ausführlich erläutert.

Abschließend fand eine spannende Podiumsdiskussion zur digitalen Transformation in Deutschland statt. Die Runde wurde von Sven Winterhalder (Leiter Hochschulentwicklung) moderiert. Es nahmen teil: Prof. Dr. Veronika Thurner (Dekanin für Informatik), Prof. Dr. Thomas Stumpp (Vizepräsident für Wirtschaft), Thomas Bönig (CIO der Landeshauptstadt München), Michael Hack (Leiter Unternehmensentwicklung am SCE) und Till Dalikowski.

Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem AWS Cloud Innovation Center Programm haben die Studenten Zugang zu AWS Technologien, Innovationsmethoden und technischem Fachwissen, um mit “born in the cloud”-Lösungen zu experimentieren. Ein übergreifendes Team von MUAS- und AWS-Mitarbeitern wird eng zusammenarbeiten, um mit Hilfe des Amazon-Innovationsprozesses “Working Backwards” cloud-basierte IT-Lösungen zu entwickeln.

Das Digital Transformation Lab in München ist Mitglied eines globalen Netzwerks von Cloud Innovationszentren in Frankreich (Sciences Po), USA (Cal Poly und Arizona State University), Australien (Swinburne University), Kanada (University of British Colombia), Berlin (CODE University) und Südkorea (City of Busan).
