Announcing the keynote speakers at the AWS Public Sector Summit Online 2020

The AWS Public Sector Summit Online 2020 is happening June 30 and registration is still open and at no-cost. Teresa Carlson, vice president of worldwide public sector at Amazon Web Services (AWS), will host the event keynote, reflecting on the impressive global efforts of our customers and partners over the past few months and sharing the latest news and announcements. Three customers will join her on our virtual stage to tell their stories focused on fast migration, business resiliency, scalability, and innovation. Max Peterson, vice president of International Sales of worldwide public sector at AWS, will close the event by sharing how you can further your mission and implement solutions right now—so be sure to stay tuned.

Meet our featured speakers and learn more about their stories:

Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training (DLT)

Faced with a huge spike in unemployment due to COVID-19, the Rhode Island DLT knew they had to update their outdated systems quickly to handle the increase in filings for unemployment insurance. In only a few weeks, applications represented almost 20% of the population. To meet their mission to serve their residents and fast, Rhode Island DLT turned to the cloud. Scott R. Jensen, director of the Rhode Island DLT, will discuss how they created and deployed a cloud-based call center for their unemployment program and implemented Amazon Connect in just ten days.

Unanimously confirmed in 2015, Jensen leads Governor Gina M. Raimondo’s skills agenda. Jensen previously served as deputy secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation and two four-year terms on the City Council of Easton, Maryland. Jensen holds a bachelor of arts in history from Illinois State and a master of arts in liberal education from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland.

Navy Enterprise Resource Planning (Navy ERP)

With slow response time, dated on-premises enterprise systems, and operations across multiple separate ledger systems, Navy ERP, the Navy’s largest financial management system, was looking to modernize. Navy ERP worked with AWS and Amazon Partner Network (APN) Partner SAP NS2 to migrate to AWS GovCloud (US), improving security, availability, and scalability. Edward E. Quick, program manager of the Navy Enterprise Business Solutions Program, will discuss how they overcame hurdles and successfully migrated in less than ten months—nearly half the expected time—and with minimal downtime.

Quick has 34 years of experience in all manner of acquisition and operational support for the Department of Defense. Quick joined the United States Army Reserve (USAR) in 1986. He retired from the USAR in 2006 after serving as a quality assurance and contracting specialist for Defense Contracts Management Agency (DCMA) at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Shuttle Transport System, and External Tank Division. He has a master of business administration in management information systems from Western International University and a bachelor of science in business administration, majoring in management information systems, from the University of Arizona.

Ontario Health, OTN

Ontario Health, OTN, formerly the Ontario Telemedicine Network, started their journey with AWS years ago with migrating their videoconferencing infrastructure and using cloud-based reporting services. But when demand for their virtual care solutions almost quadrupled in March due to COVID-19, OTN accelerated their use of cloud services, for everything from migrating their website to modernizing real-time analytics. Sharon Baker, vice president of technology and services at Ontario Health, OTN, will share how moving to the cloud helped optimize costs, increase availability, and minimize downtime and bottlenecks, while scaling to meet the surge in demand—and meet their mission to make virtual care mainstream and better connect people and care across Ontario’s health system.

For the past 20 years, Baker has held leadership roles in various healthcare sectors with increased responsibility in health system transformation, particularly in the area of eHealth, digital health, and, since joining Ontario Health, OTN, virtual care. In her current role, she provides leadership to the technology, product, and member services teams in support of OTN’s strategy. Sharon is a Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) with a bachelor of science in commerce.
