Announcing keynote speakers at the 2019 AWS Public Sector Summit in Washington, DC

The AWS Public Sector Summit in Washington, DC, is only a few days away! Have you heard who will be at the Summit?

Head to the keynote early on Tuesday, June 11, to hear from innovators who are revolutionizing how we work and live. Teresa Carlson, Vice President of Worldwide Public Sector at Amazon Web Services (AWS), will be joined by:

Andrea Norris, Director for the Center for Information Technology and the Chief Information Officer, National Institutes of Health (NIH): The NIH is the largest funder of biomedical research in the world. 80% of NIH funds — roughly $35 billion a year – supports scientific research by 300,000 researchers who are located all over the US and around the world. NIH’s mission is to turn discovery into health. And today, they are doing just that. Learn how they are able to harness the power and rapid advances in technology to accelerate discovery of new drugs, new therapeutic treatments, and cures in unimaginable ways, due to the intersection of research and technology.

Morgan Reed, Chief Information Officer, State of Arizona: In order to respond to constituent services more quickly and face issues like tracking infectious diseases and collecting vital records, the State of Arizona turned to the cloud to modernize its IT infrastructure, reduce costs, update security measures, and reduce data silos. But first, they needed to close their datacenters. Now, the State of Arizona is a model for how to remove barriers to cloud adoption. From culture change to investing in training, Morgan Reed will share the steps in his journey to the cloud and how these changes have given the state agencies the freedom to innovate.

Kenny Bowen, Department of Defense Chief Information Officer for Special Access Programs (SAP) and Compartmented Access Programs: Mr. Kenneth R. Bowen is charged with modernizing capabilities, realizing efficiencies, and strengthening cybersecurity and threat monitoring as DoD CIO for SAP. Bowen will share lessons learned on leading the Department’s efforts to consolidate DoD SAP network services. He will also share his defense-wide oversight on SAP IT, architectures, information sharing, and partnerships.

Honorable Susan (Sue) M. Gordon, Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence (PDDNI): As PDDNI, Ms. Gordon assists the DNI in leading the Intelligence Community (IC) and managing the ODNI. In her talk, she will dive into her lessons learned on advancing intelligence integration across the IC, expanding outreach and partnerships, and driving innovation across the community.

And on Wednesday, June 12 hear from, Andy Jassy, AWS CEO, in a fireside chat with Teresa Carlson. In the Q&A, Andy and Teresa will discuss the latest trends in public sector cloud adoption and how AWS is innovating to help customers drive innovation ahead of mission.

Also, the Earth & Space on AWS keynote is back by popular demand! This keynote will take place on Monday, June 10 – the day before Summit with Dr. Dava Newman, Apollo Program Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Lori Garver, CEO of Earthrise Alliance.

Lori Garver, CEO, Earthrise Alliance: Earthrise Alliance CEO and industry leader, Lori Garver, will share a view of our planet and beyond. She’ll discuss the value of public-private partnerships, the importance of elevating women in aerospace, and how Earth science data can be used to combat climate change.

Dava Newman, Apollo Program Professor of Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Institute for Data, Systems and Society: Dr. Newman championed the human journey to Mars, technology and innovation, and education and was the principal investigator on four spaceflight missions, which informed her advanced space suit design. In the keynote, Dava will share her thoughts around leadership development, innovation, and the future of space travel.
